The optical device includes a demultiplexing portion (4) (first optical member) separating TE waves and TM waves of incident light of a wavelength λ and an optical fiber (1) (optical input portion) inputting incident light into the demultiplexing portion (4). The demultiplexing portion (4) has a periodically changing refractive index. The angle defined by the first reciprocal lattice vector α 1 and the second reciprocal lattice vector α 2 of the demultiplexing portion (4) at the wavelength λ is not greater than 90°. In the direction of the first reciprocal lattice vector α 1 the wave number of the TE wave is larger than the wave number of the TM wave. In the direction of the second reciprocal lattice vector α 2 the wave number of the TE wave is smaller than the wave number of the TM wave. The optical fiber (1) inputs the incident light in a direction that is parallel to a plane including the first reciprocal lattice vector α 1 and the second reciprocal lattice vector α 2 . A system and method of controlling a video camera arranged to provide a video signal on a transmission medium including: transmitting command data on the video transmission medium to the camera, and receiving response data from the camera over the video transmission medium during a single vertical blanking period of the video signal, improving controllability of dome type cameras. Using an encoding format with data with bit widths narrower than those conventionally used in UTC protocols, increases the usable transmission medium length for the system by allowing for longer propagation delays without errors caused by interference. A method of downloading data to a camera by disabling the video signal, and a method of self-instantiating camera functions are also provided.

A flexible video information storage and analysis apparatus stores a video information data base and a plurality of moving image content analysis algorithms for analyzing the video information in the data base. A user can manipulate a mouse to select one of the analysis algorithms. The selected algorithm is used to analyze video information in the data base. The apparatus records and displays plural streams of video information. Content analysis algorithms may be downloaded from a remote location. The apparatus takes appropriate actions in response to detected features in incoming video streams. Tile-based conditional-refresh video data compression is employed. A support structure efficiently supports several record-medium drive units. A tape back-up drive serves as an archiving mechanism for video data stored on hard disks. Recording of incoming video, and archiving and displaying of stored video, all proceed simultaneously.
