The present invention provides a dental composite which has the high strength required for load-bearing restorations, yet maintains a glossy appearance, even after substantial wear. Through the use of particles having a mean particle size between about 0.05 νm and about 0.50 νm, the composite is useful in stress bearing restorations and in cosmetic restorations. The structural filler used is typically ground to a mean particle size of less than 0.5 νm and also includes a nanofiller having discrete particles of a mean particle size less than 100 nm to improve handling and mechanical characteristics. The preferred dental composites maintain their surface finish even after substantial use and also have the strength properties of hybrid composite resins.

A dental adhesive delivery system (10) provides a capsule (11) containing a single usage amount of dental adhesive (15) in a non-resealable container (14) for use in treating a single patient. The packaged amount of adhesive (15) may include up to the amount required to treat all of the teeth needing treatment of not more than a single patient, for example in the range of approximately 0.05 to 1.0 ml. The packaged amount may include a dose only large enough for the treatment of a single tooth or for the application of a single restoration, for example, in an amount of about 0.1 ml. The single use container (14) is preferably formed of injected molded plastic cup (20) and includes a reservoir section (30) having a cavity (22) therein that contains the adhesive (15) and a break off section (31) that surrounds an opening (24) that receives a snap fit cap (21). The cap (21) and break off section are discarded and the adhesive (15) is removed with the tip (55) of a wand (12) for application to the teeth of a patient, whereupon the container, which is not resealable, is discarded.

A composition for use as a dental impression material including a polymerizable resin consisting of oligomers or polymers functionalized with groups curable by ring opening metathesis polymerization. These oligomers or polymers are end-capped and/or tethered with said functional groups. The composition also includes a ruthenium carbene complex catalyst, whereby the catalyst initiates ring-opening metathesis polymerization of the composition. The invention includes a paste/paste system in which a base paste includes the polymerizable oligomer or polymer and an inorganic dental filler system and in which a catalyst paste includes the catalyst dissolved in an inert solvent and an inorganic dental filler system. The oligomer or polymer may be, for example, one or a combination of a telechelic polydimethylsiloxane end-capped with norbornenyl groups, a polydimethylsiloxane tethered and end-capped with norbornenyl groups, a tri-functional polydimethylsiloxane end-capped with norbornenyl groups, or a quadri-functional polydimethylsiloxane end-capped with norbornenyl groups. The catalyst may be, for example, a ruthenium carbene complex with a ligand having a basicity higher than tricyclohexylphosphine. The composition of the present invention exhibits reduced sensitivity to sulfur impurities.

The present invention provides a resin-based dental restorative that exhibits high condensability, low volumetric shrinkage and low shrinkage stress. To this end, one or more of a rheological modifier, dispersant and fluorocopolymer are mixed with a methalcrylate resin and a fine mineral filler in amounts effective to improve the condensability of the resulting composite to achieve amalgam-like condensation, to reduce the volumetric shrinkage to less than about 2% during polymerization, to improve wear resistance, and to provide a composite with generally improved physical properties.

One or more elastomeric (meth)acrylate oligomers are mixed with one or more diluent comonomers, one or more radiopaque fillers and one or more polymerization initiator systems. One or more antimicrobial agents may also be included in the composition. The components are mixed, undergo a setting reaction and are subsequently cured. In use, the composition is easily removed from the tooth structure if rework is needed, yet provides a tight and effective seal in the root canal. The composition also has a desirable flowable consistency and exhibits good adhesiveness with a tooth substrate.

There is provided a resin-containing dental composite including a dispersed phase, reinforcing, translucent filler having about 25-80 % by volume of the filler particles in the particle size range from about 0.2 νm to about 0.6 νm whereby the composite has a self-opalescing quality. Without the addition of opalescence-imparting pigments, a dental restorative composite is provided that displays opalescence to the visible eye, which gives the restoration the appearance of a vital, natural tooth. Preferably, the refractive indices of the resin and the translucent filler are the same or subtantially similar, both advantageously being within the range of 1.45-1.60. Further, to prevent the opal effect from being masked, the dental restorative composite advantageously comprises less than 0.0021 % by weight yellow hue pigments such that the composite formulation is relatively colorless.

The other assembly may include a magnetic element. The telescope assembly may be releasably adjoined to the anchor assembly by magnetic attraction. The magnetic attraction may include magnetic interaction between the magnet and the magnetic element. Geometrical shape and magnetic properties of each of the magnet and the magnetic element, and placement of each within its assembly, may be set for maintaining releasable adjoinment of the assemblies. The loupe may provide a magnified view of a visual field, such as a clinical setting. The telescope assembly may be interchangeable in the loupe for another telescope assembly. The interchangeable telescope assemblies may provide different magnifications of the field. Loupes may be paired for binocular magnified viewing of the field.
