An instrument 10 and method for curing light-curable compounds in the mouth of a patient, the instrument comprising a housing 1 2 and a plurality 32 of solid state, light-emitting elements 30 on a substrate 34 supported by the housing 12. The elements 30 form a collective array 32 on the substrate 34 operable for collectively emitting light having wavelengths within a narrow band of wavelengths. An optical focusing device 44 is positioned to intercept the light emitted by the array 32 of elements and includes a non-imaging optical device which is operable for collimating the light from the array into a beam to be directed onto a compound for curing the compound. A disposable sleeve 50 covers the housing and array and may incorporate the optical focusing device. The sleeve 50 is removed and discarded after use to eliminate the need to autoclave the instrument.

In one embodiment, the structural filler has a refractive index substantially similar to that of the polymerizable resin, a coarse particle fraction, and a fine particle fraction having a mean particle size greater than 0.1 µm and smaller than the mean particle size of the course particle fraction. The relative ratio of the coarse particle fraction to the fine particle fraction is in the range from 12:1 to 2:1 by volume, the particle size distribution of each fraction is essentially monomodal, and the D(90) of the fine particle fraction is less than or equal to the D(10) of the course particle fraction.

Bonding a dental component to a tooth includes placing the thermoplastic-based polymer adhesive between the dental component and the surface of the tooth and compressing the dental component against the adhesive, and, while compressing, applying an activation energy to cause crosslinking of the additional polymer or additive with the thermoplastic polymer.

The short-cut fibers may be made of a glass or a polymer, and may have an average length of about 2 mm to about 6 mm. The particulate filler includes a ground structural filler, which consists of particles having an average particle size of between about 0.05 µm and about 0.5 µm, and a microfiller, which consists of particles having a mean particle size of about 0.04 µm or less. A composition is used for temporarily widening a gingival sulcus, the composition comprising a polymerizable monomer having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group, a photo polymerization initiator, a fine inorganic powder, and an astringent. The uncured composition is inserted within a gingival sulcus to be widened, and the composition is thereafter irradiated in situ to polymerize the composition. The result is a rubbery material that is easily removable from the widened sulcus.
