Alternatively the inner product of signal eigenvalue vectors and azimuth vectors is transformed using the FFT and a MUSIC spectrum is calculated (Step 17). A DOA is then estimated based on the MUSIC spectrum obtained (Step 16), thereby decreasing the quantity of calculations required for detecting a DOA of an incident wave using MUSIC algorithm.

By forming by stratification a self-ignitable preliminary air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber (5), a spatial distribution is given to the density of the preliminary air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber (5). Part of the preliminary air-fuel mixture formed in the combustion chamber (5) is ignited by the spark plug (7) to cause combustion by flame propagation, then the remaining preliminary air-fuel mixture is successively made to self-ignite and burn with a time lag. The ignition timing is set so that the ratio of the preliminary air-fuel mixture made to burn by self-ignition becomes more than a predetermined lower limit and less than a knocking generation limit.

The photocatalytic material has acquired a new energy level formed in a band gap of titanium oxide, which results in its exhibition of a photocatalytic activity by absorbing visible lights. The photocatalytic material can thus exhibit a satisfactory photocatalytic activity under sunlight and also in a room with a fluorescent lamp.

This invention provides a method of forming a powder compact which can produce a high density compact under a high pressure and at the same time can reduce pressure for ejecting the compact from a die. This method comprises the application step of applying a higher fatty acid lubricant to an inner surface of a heated die, and the compaction step of filling metal powder into the die and compacting the metal powder under such a pressure as to force the higher fatty acid lubricant to be chemically bonded with the metal powder and form a metallic soap coating. Since the metallic soap coating is formed between the die and a compact, friction force between the die and the compact is decreased and ejecting pressure can be remarkably decreased despite of compaction with high pressure. Besides, a high density compact can be obtained owing to the compaction with high pressure.
