The present invention relates to a cooling system for cryostats or transport containers for liquids incorporating a PTR cooler. The cryostat usually consists of several interior cylindrical or otherwise shaped vessels for storing liquids. In particular, the cryostat for NMR applications and related fields usually comprises an outer vacuum case, sometimes also a nitrogen can, as well as one or several radiation shields and the helium vessel housing the superconducting magnet whereas the latter usually is made of NbTi, Nb 3 Sn, and/or some HTC conductor. It is the aim of the present invention to use a pulse tube cooler by incorporation into an NMR cryostat via an opening, an opening refers to the neck tube itself or to any other means for accessing the cryostat for filling or for energising the magnet or acting conjointly as a pressure relief tube or/and as a drainage outlet e.g. for storage tanks and most generally for using the pulse tube as a means for rigidly suspending or supporting various parts in a cryostat.

The present invention relates to MRI or NMR systems and, in particular, to a cooling system for a magnet assembly housed in a cryostat incorporating a pulse tube refrigerator (8). The cryostat usually consists of several interior cylindrical or oval-shaped vessels for storing liquids and usually comprises an outer vacuum case, a nitrogen can or a radiation shield instead, and a further radiation shield and the helium vessel (4) housing the superconducting magnet (2). The magnet usually is made of NbTi, Nb3Sn, or some HTC conductor or a combination of both. The present invention uses a pulse tube refrigerator (8), the so-called pulse tube cooler, which essentially comprises an empty tube and a further tube housing the regenerator material for the cooler, which is inserted into the neck tube (6) of the cryosat.

The various components, namely the different vessels contained within each other for housing the superconducting magnet, or the liquid comprising a cryostat or storage tank for cryogenic liquids are generally either suspended or supported by each other. Thus, a support/suspension system has various tasks, besides carrying the magnet or shield loads, it also keeps the position of the cold mass during shipping and also fixes the internal clearances between the radiation shields during installation as well as repeated cooldown. The various constraints put onto these suspension systems result in an increased input of heat into the cryostat depending on the overall size of cryostat and superconducting magnet system. Various parts of the cryogenic components such as radiation shields have to be cooled, either by means of using liquids or by using forced convection cooling, or by other external means such as conventional GM-cryocoolers. The present invention therefore provides a new type of support or suspension system which combines the two functions mentioned above, namely supporting or suspending and cooling, and applies these to the pulse tube cooler. The pulse tubes (22-38) could be arranged in series or in parallel, could be single or multi-staged or feature an additional liquefying stage and suspend or support a superconducting magnet or HTS conductor within a cryostat. The pulse tube being either a suspension or support member could also simultaneously cool the shields 26 connected to it and at the same time carry shield or magnet loads.

Cryostat systems comprise first and second liquid interconnected helium baths, and a magnet structure which is immersed in one of the baths. The liquid helium is cooled by means of a pumped refrigeration means. The present invention replaces the pumped refrigeration means with a pulse tube refrigerator which can be located directly within the two baths. The pulse tube refrigerator has a 'cold finger' having cold and warm ends. The cold end extracts into the bath housing the coil structure and has heat exchange connected thereto. The pulse tube refrigerator can also serve to cool the radiation shields.
