The foamable resin composition of the present invention is characterized by comprising starch, a synthetic resin, an alkaline compound, and water in an amount of 10 to 40 parts by weight with respect to 100 parts by weight of the starch, wherein the synthetic resin content is 0.02 to 10 wt%. The alkaline compound is preferably at least one selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal hydrogen carbonate, an alkali metal carbonate, an alkali earth metal hydrogen carbonate, and an alkali earth metal carbonate. The foam obtained by using the foamable resin composition of the present invention is free from a practical problem such as cushioning properties and the like, and has a cost advantage as an amount of a synthetic resin is extremely small.

A hydrophobic biodegradable material contains host material and foamer. The host material is a product by melting a mixture, which comprises polyol, polyvinyl alcohol containing water, and starch contained or not. Said polyvinyl alcohol is a hydrophobic polyvinyl alcohol. The host material in the hydrophobic biodegradable material of the present invention is a product by melting the swollen hydrophobic polyvinyl alcohol, polyol and starch that is chosen to be contained or not. The melt temperature of the obtained host material is 130-210 , which is much lower than its decomposition temperature which is 240-420 , so it may be in molten state, and in a true sense can be extrusion-granulated and foaming-molded. The resulting foamed articles, produced by the hydrophobic biodegradable material of the present invention, have good expansion ratio that is more than 45%, compressive strength which is not less than 35 Kpa, water resistance and biodegradability.

A process for obtaining a spray-dried high amylose sodium carboxymethyl starch comprising a major fraction of amorphous form and optionally a minor fraction of crystalline V form, is provided. The process comprises providing an amorphous pregelatinized high amylose sodium carboxymethyl starch (HASCA); dispersing the amorphous pregelatinized HASCA in a solution comprising water and at least one first pharmaceutically acceptable organic solvent miscible with water and suitable for spray-drying; and spray-drying the dispersion to obtain the spray-dried HASCA comprising a major fraction of amorphous form and optionally a minor fraction of crystalline V form, in the form of a powder. Also provided is a spray-dried HASCA sustained-release excipient. This excipient is useful for preparing a tablet for the sustained-release of at least one drug.
