The invention relates to optical birefringent waveguides, acousto-optical devices using such optical waveguides and an acoustic waveguide formed in a substrate as well as a manufacturing method therefore. The optical waveguides of the invention exhibit a small birefringent variation with respect to a change of waveguide parameters, if the fundamental mode propagating in the optical waveguide has a propagation constant near to the cut-off condition. The optical waveguide dimensions are typically chosen such that the cut-off wavelength of the waveguide is below 1650 nm for an operating wavelength in the window between 1530 nm and 1565 nm. The acousto-optic mode converter using such optical waveguides have a superior conversion characteristic over the conversion frequency with reduced side lobes. Therefore, using the thin and narrow optical waveguides of the invention, a superior performance of the acousto-optical devices using such an optical waveguide can be obtained.

The configuration includes a plurality of AOTFs cascaded together. Each AOTF generates a surface acoustic wave in an optical waveguide in accordance with RF signals applied to the AOTF. A phase of a beat generated by the RF signals applied to one of the plurality of AOTFs is different from a phase of a beat generated by the RF signals applied to a different AOTF of the plurality of AOTFs.

This acousto-optic device comprises an elasto-optic medium (1) with an acoustic transducer (2) capable of generating in the elasto-optic medium an acoustic wave modulated along a predetermined direction, and means for coupling in the elasto-optic medium a polarised incident optical wave (Si). The device has a programming circuit (6) for modulating the acoustic wave. This device can be inserted in a laser system. It then receives a polarised extended optical impulse to be amplified and supplies an extended optical impulse. An optical amplifier amplifies the extended optical impulse and an optical compressing device compresses the amplified extended optical impulse. The effects of the chain dispersal can be compensated by programming the acousto-optic device.

A first polarization filter [123] passes light of a first polarization state, the first polarization filter [123] being located between the laser amplifier [112] and the first port [185] of the AOTF [110]. The laser [100] also includes a first asymmetrical polarization rotator [154] located between the first port [185] of the AOTF [110] and the first polarization filter [123]. The first asymmetrical polarization rotator [185] rotates the polarization of light traveling from the first port [185] of the AOTF [110] to the first polarization filter [123] by 90° while leaving unchanged the polarization of light traveling from the first polarization filter [123] to the first port [185] of the AOTF [185]. A reflector [120] reflects light leaving the second port [186] of the AOTF [110] back into the second port [186] of the AOTF [110]. A second polarization filter [153] located between the mirror [120] and the second port [186] of the AOTF [110] passes light of a second polarization state which is orthogonal to the first polarization. A second asymmetrical polarization rotator [155] is located between the second port [186] of the AOTF [110] and the second polarization filter [153]. A process for the manufacture of an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) employs a single soaking step at an elevated temperature for an extended period. A suitable dopant such as titanium is deposited on a substrate typically of lithium niobate, in three parallel strips so that following soaking, an optical waveguide is formed between regions defining the limits of the acoustic waveguide. The thickness and linewidth of the deposited dopant which forms the optical waveguide are selected having regard to the soaking period required to form the acoustic waveguide, so that a predetermined mode geometry for the optical waveguide will be formed in substantially the same soaking period as is required to form the acoustic waveguide.

A polarization independent acousto-optical tunable filter (AOTF). The AOTF is fabricate with two waveguides [33] [35] formed on a single substrate [31]. An incoming polarization independent beam of light is split into TE and TM optical components with a walk-off crystal [37] wherein each optical component is coupled into a different one of the two waveguides [33] [35]. The AOTF can be formed to provide two stages of filtering. The two stages of filtering can be realized be providing two successive stages or by passing the optical signal through the same filter twice. Various configurations are obtained by placing TM and TE polarizers within the optical path traveled by the incoming beam of light.
