It is the object of this invention to provide a method for the preparation of an antiblocking agent which is effective in its antiblocking activity but is considerable less visible in photographic enlargements made from the film containing the antiblock of this invention. There is described a process for the preparation of monodispersed polymer particles between 5 and 10 microns in diameter which comprises preparing a dispersion of monosized seed polymer particles and then adding to this dispersion an ethylenically unsaturated monomer which is different from the monomer used to prepare the seed polymer particles, together with a polymerization initiator and completing the polymerization, the refractive index of one of the polymers produced being greater than 1.54 and the refractive index of the other polymer being less than 1.54. The refractive index of gelatin is 1.54. There is produced by the process of the present invention a particle which comprises two polymers. Most preferably one polymer has a refractive index which is as much below 1.54 as the other polymer has a refractive index above 1.54. Preferably the final particles comprises substantially equal amounts of the two polymers.

Microcapsules for copying material are prepared by dissolving a diazonium salt and shell-forming reactants in a non-aqueous solvent having a boiling point of from 40 to 95°C at atmospheric pressure, e.g. an ester, emulsifying the solution in a hydrophilic protective coloid solution, heating to cause shell-formation around the resultant oil droplets, and preferably under reduced pressure to remove the non-aqueous solvent. A coupling component and a basic substance are mixed with the microcapsules and together coated on a support, e.g. of paper or a synthetic resin film, optionally transparent, and dried to form heat-developable copying material in which the non-aqueous solvent is no longer detectable. Preferred basic substances are guanidines, and couplers can be active methylene compounds. A low-boiling co-solvent may be added to the organic solvent to obtain a transparent copying material. The sensitive layer may be composed of several sub-layers; by using several diazo compounds multi-colour material is obtained. In use, the material is image-wise exposed to light through an original whereby the exposed area is fixed, and overall exposed to develop the coloured image. Good, stable images are obtained.

A microencapsulated photochromic material, a process for its preparation, and a water-base ink composition prepared therefrom are disclosed. The microencapsulated photochromic material comprises a solution of a spirooxazine compound enclosed in microcapsules. The process for preparing the microencapsulated photochromic material comprises dissolving the spirooxazine compound in a solvent having a boiling point of 40 to 160°C and a solubility in water (at 20°C) of up to 15 wt %, microencapsulating the solution, and evaporating most of the solvent during or after the microencapsulating step, thus leaving only a minute amount of the solvent. The water-base ink composition comprises an aqueous medium, a colorant and a vehicle as major components, said colorant being the microcapsules containing the solution of a photochromic compound, said vehicle being an aqueous emulsion resin, and said composition having a pH of 5 or more.

Material and processes useful in providing visible images through reaction with a colour precursor and useful in providing transparencies or in providing reproductions with a controlled degree of gloss are described. A developer sheet material useful in forming reproductions having a controllable gloss finish, or in forming transparencies has a support with a layer of a finely divided, thermoplastic, developer material on its surface. The developer material is capable of reacting with a colour precursor to produce a visible image and is also capable of coalescing into a thin film which imparts gloss to the image upon application of heat and/or pressure. Photosensitive material in which images are formed by reaction of one or more chomogenic materials and a developer, in addition to the support and the developer material has a layer of microcapsules overlying the layer of developer material. The microcapsules contain a photosensitive composition which undergoes a change in viscosity upon exposure to actinic radiation and a colour precursor.
