A method and apparatus for high energy rate forming of metal. A die/mould (11) of the shape to which a metal sheet (13) or panels (18) is to be formed is lined with the metal sheet (13) or panels (18) and filled with a liquid medium. A number of explosive charges are then placed at strategic locations within the liquid medium and detonated causing deformation of the metal sheet (13) or panels (18) to the shape defined by the die/mould (11). The die/mould (11) is normally buried in a pit and supported therein during the deformation process. The die/mould (11) consists of longitudinal extending ribs (12) with air spaces (15) therebetween supported by upstanding webs (16) secured to base (17). The air spaces (15) enable air trapped between the metal sheet (13) or panels (18) and the die/mould (11) to escape during the deformation process. A method of forming boat hulls using this method is disclosed.

In a method of explosively expanding a tubular metal component into engagement with a surrounding metal component, an explosive charge is disposed axially and fired in an insert comprising a hollow cylindrical container fitting closely within the portion of the tubular metal component to be expanded and having charge holding means, for example an axial pocket, to accommodate the explosive charge, the container being filled with a shock wave-transmitting liquid. Compared with solid inserts, the novel hollow insert is cheaper and requires a smaller explosive charge for a given operation. The method is especially advantageous for expanding large diameter tubes.

An improved method for the explosive expansion and welding of tubes (14) to tube sheet (10) includes trepanning (at 22) the rear face (20) of the tube sheet to form integral collars (28) around each tube-receiving bore in the tube sheet. The collars prevent accumulation of corrosive material in a gap between the tube and tube sheet bore, and provide support to the tube wall when the tube is explosively expanded beyond the region of the tube surrounded by the collar.
