Also disclosed is a method in which the protective coating on the metal tube is replaced by a full length external shroud tube (21) to increase the thermal efficiency of the cooling element, the inner metal cooling tube (20) is explosively expanded by an explosive charge (23) closer to the surrounding shroud tube (21) prior to casting a metal plate or block (28) around the tube combination (20, 21) to minimise the gap (22) between the outside wall of the metal cooling tube (20) and the inside wall of the metal protective shroud tube (21). Following casting the metal plate or block (28), the metal cooling tube (20) is again explosively expanded closer to the protective shroud tube (21) by a further explosive charge (23').

Dans le procédé, les substances de départ de l'explosif sont, par exemple, tout d'abord introduites dans des récipients de sûreté dans la chambre d'élaboration (20), puis le mélange explosif final est préparé dans cet emplacement et l'explosif prêt à l'emploi est ensuite transféré à travers le sas (7) dans la chambre d'explosion (1) maintenue en permanence sous une pression négative. A first explosive extends within the chamber defined by the cup and the plug and a second explosive extends within a bore defined within the plug. The sensitivity of the second explosive is greater than that of the first explosive so that, upon detonation by an externally actuated elongated member, sequential detonation of the second explosive and the first explosive occurs.

Apparatus for expanding a tube into a bore formed in a tube sheet in which a tubular force-transmitting member extends within the tube coextensive with the portion of the tube to be expanded. An explosive is disposed in the bore of the force-transmitting member, so that the forces resulting from the explosion of the explosive are uniformly transferred by the force-transmitting member to expand the tube into the bore. A tubular barrier member extends between the force-transmitting member and the tube and has a portion projecting from the tube sheet, and a plug is disposed in the end of the projecting portion of the barrier member to contain the debris and gases resulting from the explosion.
