A receiver (2) receives and stores the gas in a compressed condition. A method comprises: launching observation means configured to observe upper air environment immediately before launching an airship to acquire ambient air data on the actual conditions of the upper ambient air including altitude, pressure, wind direction, wind speed and temperature; determining an ascension profile for the airship by simulation using the ambient air data on the actual conditions of the ambient air; determining an initial quantity of Helium gas conforming to the actual conditions of the ambient air; and adjusting the quantity of Helium gas in the Helium room to the initial quantity of Helium gas to set an initial buoyancy. The method sets hull parameters for the hull of the airship to provide an ascension profile conforming to the actual conditions of the ambient air.

There are two ways to control the operation of vent valve (5) closing aperture (3) at the top of envelope (2) of hot air balloon (1). First control means normally extends valve panel (5) via a plurality of control lines (6) extending radially from its perimeter so as to close valve (5). This control means also includes a plurality of parachute shroud lines (18) conjoined at (19) to lines (6) at the perimeter of valve (5). Lines (18) join at central claw (20) from which control line (8) extends to the pilot for controlled slower release of gas during flight by lowering of valve (5) away from envelope (2). For rapid venting of gas, as may be needed on landing, the pilot pulls on line (7) of second control means. This leads to a plurality of control lines (13) attached to the underside of valve (5). Pulling on line (7) contracts or gathers valve (5) radially inwardly and downwardly to almost completely uncover aperture (3).

The invention is a ballonet system for a lighter-than-air-vehicle, the vehicle having a lift producing gasbag and a longitudinal, vertical and lateral axis. In detail, the ballonet system includes a plurality of ballonets (34A) located within the gasbag (12) positioned along the longitudinal axis (18) and on each side of the vertical axis (19) of the vehicle (10). Each of the ballonets (34A) include a flexible sheet (40) joined at its periphery (43) thereof to a portion of the wall (44) of the gasbag. A ballonet pressurization system (45) is coupled ot each ballonet (34A) for pressurizing them with air that includes the portion of the wall (44) of the gasbag (12) forming the ballonet having a plurality of holes (54) therethrough. A manifold (60) having an inlet port (64) is joined to the wall covering the holes (54) therein and is adapted to diffuse the pressurized air entering therein. Also included is at least one fan (46) having an inlet port (50) coupled to ambient atmosphere and an outlet port (51) coupled to the inlet port (64) of the manifold (60) for providing pressurized air to the interior thereof. A check valve (52) located in the outlet port (51) of the fan (46) is provided for preventing air from flowing from the interior of the manifold out the inlet port of the fan. A ballonet venting system (70) is included for venting the interior of the ballonet to ambient atmosphere.
