摘要: The invention is a ballonet system for a lighter-than-air-vehicle, the vehicle having a lift producing gasbag and a longitudinal, vertical and lateral axis. In detail, the ballonet system includes a plurality of ballonets (34A) located within the gasbag (12) positioned along the longitudinal axis (18) and on each side of the vertical axis (19) of the vehicle (10). Each of the ballonets (34A) include a flexible sheet (40) joined at its periphery (43) thereof to a portion of the wall (44) of the gasbag. A ballonet pressurization system (45) is coupled ot each ballonet (34A) for pressurizing them with air that includes the portion of the wall (44) of the gasbag (12) forming the ballonet having a plurality of holes (54) therethrough. A manifold (60) having an inlet port (64) is joined to the wall covering the holes (54) therein and is adapted to diffuse the pressurized air entering therein. Also included is at least one fan (46) having an inlet port (50) coupled to ambient atmosphere and an outlet port (51) coupled to the inlet port (64) of the manifold (60) for providing pressurized air to the interior thereof. A check valve (52) located in the outlet port (51) of the fan (46) is provided for preventing air from flowing from the interior of the manifold out the inlet port of the fan. A ballonet venting system (70) is included for venting the interior of the ballonet to ambient atmosphere.

摘要: This invention is an attachment fitting for use on the flexible wall of a structure. In detail, the fitting (24) includes a slot (36) in the wall (30) of the structure. A first flexible member (40) is included having a center portion (42) folded over its self forming a loop extending through the slot (36) from a first side (32) of the wall (30) and out from the second side (34), and outer fan shaped portions (44A, 44B) on each end of the center portion (42) bonded to the first side (32) of the wall of the structure adjacent to the slot. The first flexible member (40) further includes a plurality unidirectional reinforcing filaments (48) in a matrix material with the filaments being parallel to each other in the center portion (42) and fanning out from each other in each of the outer portions (44A, 44B). A second flexible member (50) having a periphery extending about the slot (36) and the outer portions of the first flexible member (40) is bonded thereto and to the first side (32) of the flexible wall of the structure.

摘要: The invention is a propulsion system for a lighter-than-air vehicle. In detail, the propulsion system includes a thrust producing assembly (26) rotatably mounted on the vehicle (10), about an axis of rotation in a plane at an acute angle to the vertical axis (14) of the vehicle, the assembly (26) rotatable in the plane from a position wherein the thrust axis of the assembly (26) is aligned with the longitudinal axis (12) to a position at least plus or minus ninety degrees thereto. A fuel efficient powerplant assembly (32A, 32B) mounted within the vehicle (10) having sufficient power for cruise conditions, and an output drive shaft (46) coupled to the thrust producing assembly (26). A light weight, high power powerplant assembly (71) is mounted directly to the thrust producing assembly (26) having sufficient power for docking conditions. A first clutch (39A, 39B) is provided for decoupling the fuel efficient powerplant (32A, 32B) from the thrust producing assembly (26) and second clutch means (73) is provided for de-coupling the powerplant (71) from the thrust producing assembly. An actuation system (74) is provided for rotating the thrust producing assembly about the axis of rotation.
