The invention relates to the installation of electrical apparatus for receiving broadcast data, referred to as a receiver, which receives data and generates video/audio displays through a television set to which it is connected. When installing, the receiver can use the RF modulator signal from the television as reference but this can be interfered if the channel used to carry the signal is already used to receive a signal from an aerial input. The current invention prevents interference by first scanning the aerial input to identify the signals received and the location of the same which then allows free locations or channels to be identified and used for the RF modulator signal.

This invention relates to a modulator circuit (2) for a video system such as a VCR. The modulator circuit (2) is selectably operable in any one of a plurality of modes of operation in order to comply with the operating standard of the video system. The modulator circuit comprises oscillator means (4, 10) for generating a carrier signal having a selectably variable frequency, and modulating means (3) coupled to receive the carrier signal and having an audio input (24) for receiving an audio signal and a video input (26) for receiving a video signal, the modulating means using the video and audio signals to generate a modulated output signal on the carrier signal, the generation of the modulated output signal depending on selectably variable operating parameters of the modulating means. The modulator circuit further comprises control means (5, 6, 20) coupled to the oscillator means (4, 10) and to the modulating means (3), for receiving a mode select signal (SCL, SDA) and for selecting the frequency of the carrier signal and for selecting predetermined values for the variable operating parameters of the modulating means in dependence on the mode select signal whereby the modulated output signal is generated in accordance with one of the plurality of modes of operation.

The division ratio (integer) of the variable frequency divider (18) is continuously varied, and the reference frequency of a reference oscillator (16) is set to be less than a predetermined channel interval frequency, thereby reducing the frequency error in the modulated signal output.

A video signal recorder/player device, e.g. a video tape recorder, is adapted to a select a playback channel to be any one of a plurality of UHF television channels. A microcontroller in the device sets a UHF tuner in the device to each UHF channel in turn and tests the signal level in the channel. A free channel containing substantially no signals is selected, when found, as the playback channel, only when the immediately adjacent lower channel does not contain a wanted broadcast television transmission. Once a selection is made, the microcontroller sets the playback channel frequency to that of the selected channel.
