The method consists in the polymerization of olefins with a prevailing content of 1-butene and cis- and trans-2-butenes in the mixture of hydrocarbons known as rafinate II, which is derived from the C₄-fractions after separation of 1,3-butadiene and isobutylene, under initiation with boron trifluoride (BF₃) or alkylaluminium chlorides with the general formulae R₂AlCl and RAlCl₂ (in which each R represents a C₁ to C₆-alkyl group) in the presence of hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen fluoride (HF), or organic compounds with a reactive chlorine or fluorine bonded to a tertiary-, benzyl- or allyl-carbon atom, as coinitiators. The method according to the solution may be carried out in such a way, that rafinate II derived from the production of methyl tert-butyl ether or from the selective polymerization of isobutylene, in which 1-butene present in a concentration at least 20% is polymerized together with cis- and trans-2-butenes present in a concentration of at least 15%, at a temperature of +100°C to -70°C, to form to oily products with molar mass M n = 300 to 1200. Preferably the mixture derived as rafinate II from the production of methyl tert-butyl ether is first freed of methanol to the content lower than 300p ppm.

A rubber compounding material incorporating a cyclopentadiene-based pertroleum resin prepared by thermally copolymerizing 100 parts by weight of a cyclopentadiene-based feed or dicyclopentadiene-based feed with about 5 to 100 parts by weight of an α-olefin having from 6 to 16 carbon atoms at a temperature of from about 200 to 300°C for a period of from about 10 minutes to 10 hours in the presence or absence of a solvent. A rubber composition is also disclosed, composed of this rubber compounding material in combination with a diene-based polymer. In rubber compositions for tires, the compounding material and rubber composition of the present invention greatly improve resistance to cutting and chipping of the tread.

This invention relates to pressure sensitive adhesive formulations which include a saturated midblock thermoplastic elastomer such as a block copolymer of polystyrene and hydrogenated polydiene such as Kraton TM G and a fully saturated tackifying resin derived from petroleum feedstock polymerized in the presence of aluminium chloride and having a Mn ranging from 400 to 800, a softening point of 40 to 70 DEG C and a glass transition temperature less than 45 DEG C whereby the adhesive formulations have a rolling ball tack of less than 10 cm., a 180 DEG peel of from 1 to 4 pounds per inch, a 90 DEG quick stick of from 0.5 to 2.0 pounds per inch and a Polyken probe tack of higher than 400 g/cm with a formulation containing 100 to 180 phr of the saturated tackifying resin.

The order of polymerisation may be reversed.
