The substrate and the adhesive together provide at least one masking edge where the edge coating is applied. The edge coating includes a lipophilic agent, a flocculating agent, or combinations thereof. The edge coating provides the tape with enhanced masking ability by preventing paints, varnishes, paint strippers, and other coating compositions from infiltrating the tape substrate or the interface between the tape and an adherend.

The masking strip comprises a backing (10) having a first surface and a second surface. A gap filler (13) is also provided, extending from the backing (10) and adapted to prevent the flow of paint into the gap (8). The backing (10) is formed from, or attached to, a fibre—containing material that acts to wick paint away from the interior surface of the gap (8) to which the masking strip is fixed. Preferably the fibre—containing material is one of paper, tissue, a non-woven or a woven material.

The masking can be effected by introducing a resiliently deformable elongate strip mask into the gap so as to compress it to be pinched in the gap to protrude therefrom and, after painting, to remove the strip from the gap prior to overpainting. The mask may be introduced with the closure member closed, and needs no adhesive to hold it to the door or surround.

The invention relates to a method for extracting and cleaning contaminated air occurring during the application of paint. The method comprises generating an airflow toward a suction device, guiding at least part of the airflow from the environment of the surface of an object to be painted to the suction device, wherein the airflow is constricted toward the suction device. The method further comprises guiding at least part of the airflow past a surface of a filter of the suction device, by means of an air guide device, wherein said part of the airflow gradually enters the filter. The method can comprise the deposition of particles entrained by the contaminated air on the air guide device.
