A memory chip (150) associated with the bag (80), or with a mounting member (60) connected to the bag (80), is in communication with the central data processor in the vending machine circuit when the collection bag (80) is mounted and is receiving coins. When the portable collection bag (80) is disconnected, the memory chip (150) becomes disconnected from the circuit and breaks the circuit, causing the vending machine to shut down. This automatic shutdown feature reduces another kind of pilferage by discouraging the depositing of coins into the vending machine when the coin collection security bag (80) is not in place.

A system for the secure transportation of articles such as cheques and bank notes comprises first and second docking stations (18) at different locations, and a secure container (20) which mates with the docking stations. The container has a number of lockable doors (42, 44) into which bank notes are fed by a feeder mechanism (40) at the first docking station. The container has its own microcontroller which monitors the status of the doors and the integrity of the container, and which can respond to external control signals while it is in transit. Once the container has been loaded at one docking station, it is transported to the second docking station at a different location, where it can be unloaded. A one-time code is generated each time the container is loaded, and must be communicated to the second docking station before the container can be unloaded. Any attempt to tamper with the container while it is in transit results in the activation of a dye dispenser, which marks the contents of the container.

A coin box storage structure includes a coin box, a safe chamber, a shutter plate, a lock lever, a tumbler mechanism, and a dampening member. The shutter plate is swingably disposed in a lid, has a projection, and opens a coin storage port against a biasing force when the coin box is stored in the safe chamber. The lock lever has a ratchet portion engaged with the projection of the shutter plate to keep closing the coin storage port when the coin box is removed from the safe chamber. The lock lever is pressed and pivoted by the shutter plate when the coin box is stored in the safe chamber. When the lock lever is pivoted by a predetermined angle or less during opening of the lid, the tumbler mechanism reverses the lock lever to disengage the ratchet portion from the projection of the shutter plate to set the shutter plate in a preset state. When the lock lever is pivoted by the predetermined angle or more during storage of the coin box into the safe chamber, this mechanism reverses the lock lever to set the ratchet portion and the projection of the shutter plate in an engagement standby state. The dampening member inhibits to apply a pivot force to the lock lever in an initial period of pivotal movement of the lid and pivots the lock lever in pivotal movement of the lid by an angle exceeding the predetermined angle.

In the preferred embodiment of the invention, a currency security box is releasably secured to a frame within a device, such as a vending machine, gaming machine, gaming table, amusement machine, bank machine or the like, and is automatically released from the frame by sliding a transportable security box cover over the security box. At the position where the security box cover releases the box from the frame, the security box cover also effectively encloses the security box and automatically latches onto the security box. The security box, along with the security box cover, may now be removed from the frame and the device. The security box cover includes a locking device which must be activated to release the security box cover from the security box so as to gain access to the currency in the box.
