A control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) for use in a nuclear reactor, the CRDM comprising: a connecting rod connected with at least one control rod; a lead screw; a drive mechanism configured to linearly translate the lead screw; an electromagnet coil assembly; and a latching assembly that latches the connecting rod to the lead screw responsive to energizing the electromagnet coil assembly and unlatches the connecting rod from the lead screw responsive to deenergizing the electromagnet coil assembly. The latching assembly is secured with and linearly translates with the lead screw, while the electromagnet coil assembly does not move with the lead screw. The electromagnet coil assembly is at least coextensive with a linear translation stroke over which the drive mechanism is configured to linearly translate the lead screw.

The present invention provides a control rod driving mechanism (100) with safety protection function, including a rod position detector assembly, a pressure-resistant housing assembly, a claw assembly, a driving lever assembly, a coil assembly and a safety protection device. The safety protection device includes a fixing magnetic pole, a locking coil, a spring, a movable armature, a claw and a transition support sleeve, wherein a sealing housing is coupled to the transition support sleeve via the fixing magnetic pole, the transition support sleeve is coupled to the claw assembly, the movable armature is slidably arranged in the transition support sleeve. One end of the spring elastically abuts against the movable armature, and the other end of the spring elastically abuts against the fixing magnetic pole or the transition support sleeve. The claw is mounted on the transition support sleeve and linked with the movable armature, and the driving lever assembly penetrates the transition support sleeve and the fixing magnetic pole. Control rod drives include all-digital monitoring, powering, and controlling systems for operating the drives. Each controlling system includes distinct microprocessor-driven channels that independently monitor and handle control rod drive position information reported from multiple position sensors per drive. Controlling systems function as rod control and information systems with top-level hardware interfaced with nuclear plant operators other plant systems. The top-level hardware can receive operator instructions and report control rod position, as well as report errors detected using redundant data from the multiple sensors. Positional data received from each drive is multiplexed across plural, redundant channels to allow verification of the system using independent position data as well as operation of the system should a single channel or detector fail. Control rod drives are capable of positioning and detecting position of control elements in fine increments, such as 3-millimeter increments, with plural position sensors that digitally report drive status and position.
