The invention relates to a novel type of nuclear fuel rod. According to the invention, the cladding (2) of the rod (1) has an elliptical shape cross-sectional to the longitudinal direction thereof, and each nuclear fuel pellet (6) has a truncated elliptical shape along the large cladding axis. The smallest axis of the pellets is of a length equal to the small cladding axis in the nearby assembly clearance j while the difference in length between the large cladding axis and the large truncated axis of the pellets is much greater than the assembly clearance j. The invention also relates to the method for producing the nuclear fuel pellets and to the stacking thereof within the cladding so as to form a nuclear fuel rod.
