Symbols of a first one of the plurality of unmapped symbol blocks may be mapped to first and second mapped symbol blocks so that the first mapped symbol block includes symbols of the first unmapped symbol block and so that the second mapped symbol block includes symbols of the first unmapped symbol block. The symbols of the first and second mapped symbol blocks may be precoded to provide precoded symbols of respective first and second MIMO precoding layers using a MIMO precoding vector. Each of the precoded symbols of the first and second MIMO precoding layers may be transmitted through the MIMO antenna array to the wireless terminal using a same TFRE. Related devices and terminals are also discussed.

A receiving node makes an early estimate of the outcome of a decoding attempt and sends a corresponding early feedback (EHF) to the sending node. This has an effect of enabling a fast retransmission of the data by the sending node in case the decoding by the receiving node is likely to fail. An advantage of this is that any delays due to data retransmission may be minimized, resulting in a higher average throughput of the data transmission between the nodes.

The present invention relates to a method and arrangements in a communication system for Multi User Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) signaling via Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas between a base station and one of a plurality of mobile terminals supporting both Single User and Multi User Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (SU-MIMO and MU-MIMO) signaling modes. Switching between the modes is supported in the system and the modes have partly shared signaling. SU-MIMO mode signaling which is redundant, i.e. not needed, for MU-MIMO mode signaling is identified. Bits, i.e. data bits, of the identified redundant signaling is re-interpreted or re-defined to comprise signaling information associated with MU-MIMO mode. The signaling information associated with MU-MIMO mode is signaled to the mobile terminal by using the reinterpreted redundant bits.

In a mobile communication system with a shared downlink traffic channel, the mobile terminals in contention for the downlink traffic channel report channel conditions to the base stations. The base station schedules the mobile terminals based on channel quality estimates from the mobile terminals and selects a transmitter configuration. The transmitter configuration may comprise, for example, the antenna configuration, and/or power and code allocations used by the base station. The base station broadcasts the transmitter configuration to all active and inactive mobile terminals. Knowledge of the transmitter configuration by the inactive mobile terminals improves the accuracy and reliability of the channel quality estimates.

A basic idea of the invention is to provide multi-user resource scheduling and distribution based on balancing the power resources used for the different narrow beams in order to smooth the interference levels over the whole cell, area and to reduce interference fluctuations. The resource scheduling principle according to the invention is especially useful when the available resources are not fully utilized. The idea is to select, for each antenna beam of at least a subset of the antenna beams, at least two mobile users for service using the respective antenna beam during a transmission time interval (Sl), and to distribute power resources to the antenna beams for use during the transmission time interval based on the guideline of balancing the power resources among different antenna (S2).

An apparatus in a radio terminal (MS) determines a measure representing tranfer rate from a radio cell to the teminal. The apparatus includes units (SINR-1,…, SINR-4) for determining several signal quaility measures of pilot signals received from and associated with several antennas in the radio cell. A summation unit (SUM) combines several such signal quality measures into a conbined transfer rate measure associated with the radio cell. Such combined measures are determined for several radio cells surrounding the terminal. Further means (MEN, SEL, TH) select radio cells associated with combined transfer rate measures that support a predetermined tranfer rate as candidates for communication with the terminal. The selected measures are reported to the radio network controller and used for cell selection or handover.
