A method and apparatus for densely packing wire (11) in a storage drum (62) is provided. A capstan (12) is provided for pulling welding wire (11) at a set rotational velocity. The welding wire (11) is then provided to a rotatable laying head (21) which receives the wire (11) from the capstan (12), and in turn rotates with a storage drum (62) placed on a rotatable turntable (54). As the welding wire (11) is placed within the turntable (54) in layers, the turntable (54) is indexed relative to the storage drum axis and the rotational velocity of the capstan (12) and laying head (21) is altered, which causes the welding wire (11) to be placed in a layer different from the first layer. This indexing is continued until the storage drum (62) is full, forming alternating bands of welding wire (11) to increase the packing density of the storage drum (62).

In an apparatus for receiving a series of loops (L) descending along a vertical path from the delivery end of a conveyor (12) and for accumulating the thus received loops (L) into an annular coil, a device for horizontally distributing the descending loops (L). The device includes a ring (18) surrounding the vertical path. The ring (18) has a cylindrical vertical wall (18a) and a radially outwardly extending horizontal ledge (18b). A curved guide member (32) extends around a segment of the ring (18) and has leading and trailing ends (32a,32b). The guide member (32) protrudes inwardly from the ring (18) into the vertical path, with the extent of the inward protrusion being greater at the trailing end (32b) than at the leading end (32a). The guide member (32) is in mechanical interengagement with the horizontal ledge (18b) and in horizontal abutting engagement with the vertical wall (18a) to thereby accommodate vertical placement and removal of the guide member (32) onto and off of the ring (18) without attendant radial displacement of the guide member (32) with respect to the ring (18).

Des weiteren wird ein entsprechendes Verfahren vorgeschlagen.

Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Ablegeverfahren für Drahtwindungen (2) auf ein Transportband (5) mit einer Bandmitte (10), insbesondere auf ein Stelmor-Transportband (5), wobei die Drahtwindungen (2) auf dem Transportband (5) in einer Ist-Lage bezüglich der Bandmitte (10) abgelegt werden. Die Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung besteht darin, ein Ablegeverfahren zu schaffen, mit dem eine gleichmäßige Kühlung der Drahtwindungen (2) auf dem Transportband (5) erreichbar ist. Die Aufgabe wird erfindungsgemäß dadurch gelöst, daß die Drahtwindungen (2) bezüglich der Bandmitte (10) positionsgeregelt auf dem Transportband (5) abgelegt werden. Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ferner eine mit dem erfindungsgemäßen Ablegeverfahren korrespondierende Ablegevorrichtung.

An apparatus for gathering descending annular rings, e.g. of steel rod, into an upstanding annular coil is disclosed. An auxiliary coil plate (24) is mounted on and vertically adjustable with respect to the conventional elevator platform (16). The coil plate is designed to be raised into the coil forming chamber (14) well above the level of the shear mechanism (42). By doing so, the ring free fall distance is beneficially reduced at an early stage in the coil formation cycle when the bottom most rings are displayed.
