A cutting insert for metalworking operations has an insert core with a pair of cutting portions having cutting tips extending therefrom such that a toolholder having a pocket to accept such a core is suitable to accept different cutting inserts having a common core plus different cutting portions. As a result, for example, an 80° diamond, a 55° diamond and a 35° diamond cutting insert may all be utilized within a common toolholder. The invention is also directed to a toolholder that will accept such a variety of cutting inserts.

Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft einen Schneideinsatz in Form eines Polyeders mit mindestens zwei im wesentlichen parallelen Hauptflächen (2) mit jeweils polygonalem Umriß und mit mehreren Seitenflächen (3, 4), welche die parallelen Hauptflächen (2) miteinander verbinden, wobei am Übergang mindestens eines Teils der Seitenflächen (4) zu mindestens einer der Hauptflächen (2) Schneidkanten (5) ausgebildet sind, welche ein vorgebbares Profil haben, das durch eine Strukturierung der betreffenden Hauptfläche in der Nähe der Schneidkante (5) gebildet wird. Um einen Schneideinsatz und entsprechende Schneidwerkzeuge zu schaffen, die sich für die Herstellung von Strukturen geringer Tiefe als besonders günstig erweisen, wird erfindungsgemäß die Kombination der folgenden Merkmale vorgeschlagen:

The present invention provides a tangential indexable cutting insert for use in metal cutting processes in general and for radial and axial turning of a stepped square shoulder in particular. The cutting insert exhibits 180° rotational symmetry about three mutually perpendicular axes. The cutting insert has generally 'S'-shaped cutting edges extending between raised and lowered corners. The cutting edges and side surfaces are concave in an end view of the cutting insert. The cutting insert enables radial and axial turning operations of a square shoulder with unlimited depth of cut.

The cutting insert has an imaginary reference plane (P) passing through extremities of the cutting corner edges (14) thereof.
