The cutting insert is indexable about a central axis intersecting the two side surfaces. Each locating surface intersects two of three bisector planes containing the central axis and bisecting respective corners of the first imaginary triangle, and the cutting edge of each cutting portion is located entirely outside of the first imaginary triangle. In each index position the clamping member is located entirely rearward of a first vertical plane containing the central axis and perpendicular to the rearward-to-forward direction, and one of the locating surfaces is in clamping contact with the supporting surface.

An upstanding holder wall and a conical insert clearance surface are designed so as to enable securing of the insert to the holder in a finite number of fixed relative positions. A curved portion of the upstanding holder wall supports the conical clearance surface laterally in each fixed relative position of the holder and the insert. A tight abutment of the conical clearance surface on said curved portion is provided to dirt from penetrating therebetween.

The invention relates to a cutting matrix (10) to be tighten in a cutting tool (14) used for cutting cast materials. The inventive cutting matrix comprises a top surface (13), a first cavity for tightening (11) in the cutting tool (14) and a cutting edge for cutting by stock removal. The aim of the invention is do not modify the tightening characteristics of the cutting matrix (10) by honing or grinding the top surface (13) thereof. For these purposes, a second tightening cavity (12) is arranged coaxially with respect to the first cavity (11). Said first cavity (11) is embodied such that it is deeper than the second tightening cavity (12), both cavities being arranged more deeply with respect to the upper surface (13) of said cutting matrix.

The present invention relates to a cutting insert, a cutting tool for chip removing machining, a shim as well as a method for mounting a cutting insert. The cutting tool comprises a holder (31) equipped with at least one insert pocket (32) including a base surface (33), at least one circular shim (21) including opposite first and second surfaces, and at least one cutting insert (10), which comprises a circular cutting edge (14) formed at a transition between an upper side (11) and an edge surface (13) of the cutting insert. The upper side (11) comprises a chip surface comprising at least one chip breaker portion (18) and said edge surface constitutes a clearance surface. The shim (21) is provided between the base surface (33) of the insert pocket and the cutting insert (10). The cutting tool (30) comprises means for holding its parts together. The chip breaker portion (18) is provided at varying distance from the associated cutting edge (14). The shim (21) and the cutting insert (10) comprise at least one pair of cooperating projection and recess for indexing of the cutting insert. Said pair of cooperating projection and recess is provided to be positioned in a position relative to a reference line or axis of the tool (CL2) in order to orient the chip breaker portion (18) in the chip surface to a desired relative position. The number of chip breaker portions (18A-18E) is a multiple of the number of projections or recesses (20A-20E).
