The generated positive and negative ions coexist in the air and, when they attach to the surfaces of airborne bacteria, they react chemically with each other and generate radical hydroxyl and hydrogen peroxide, which extract hydrogen atoms from the cells of the bacteria and thereby kill them. This sterilizing effect is combined with the temperature-conditioning, dehumidifying, humidifying, air-purifying, and other functions of the air conditioning apparatus to bring about a comfortable and healthful indoor environment.

The invention relates to an air cleaning device for cleaning contaminated air, especially by tobacco smoke. In order to achieve efficient cleaning, the invention provides for a piece of table-like furniture, especially a table, with an integrated cleaning unit (22), especially an electrostatic cleaning unit . An air suction opening is located on top of a table board (16) and the air with large horizontal components is suctioned in a parallel direction across the table board (16). The air cleaning device provides the advantage that it can efficiently clean the air directly at the source of contamination while at the same prevents the propagation of tobacco smoke in a room.

The present invention relates to a method for cleaning of a gaseous fluid from particles being present in said fluid, said gaseous fluid being ionised, i.e. the particles are subjected to a charging, and that said ionised gaseous fluid is brought to pass through a precipitator unit (2) including a filter medium. The invention also relates to a device for cleaning of a gaseous fluid. Filters for cleaning of air often require expensive filter medium and complicated arrangements as regards ionization of the air and charging of the filter medium. The present invention is characterised by an extremely simple method where the air is ionised and then the ionised air is brought to pass through a filter medium of polypropylene.

The corona discharge electrode (21) is arranged such that the ions generated at the electrode can diffuse essentially freely away from the electrode and thereby diffuse substantially freely throughout the room in which the ionizing device (14) is positioned.

An electronic air cleaner 20 has a fan 27, driven by electric motor 28, to draw dirty air through filter 21 to remove larger dust particles and then on through an electrostatic precipitator cell consisting of an ioniser 22 and a collector 23 which has two sheets 24, 25 of open-celled reticulated polyester loaded with activated carbon electrically connected to the 4.1 kV and zero potential terminals respectively. Accordingly the charged dirt particles are deposited on the collector (23), which also acts to adsorb gaseous materials from the airstream and to remove ozone produced in the ioniser (22). Once sheets 24, 25 are no longer effective in so cleaning the airstream, the sheets (24, 25) are removed and discarded with new sheets (24, 25) being put in their place.
