A voltage detection circuit (20;80) comprises a tap (21) to be connected to a positive line (22) and a return tap (74) to be connected to a return line (24) on a power supply. The potential difference between the positive line and the return line is the input line voltage. A scaling resistor network scales down the input line voltage to be indicative of a voltage on the input line. The scaled voltage is connected to an input for a comparator (33). A reference voltage is supplied to the comparator. The reference voltage supplied to the comparator is indicative of a threshold voltage at which an output of the circuit changes states. An output of the comparator communicates a signal to an optical isolation device (60) when the input line voltage is below the threshold voltage to turn the optical isolation device on and send a signal to an output of the optical isolation device. The optical isolation device (60) is not turned on if the input line voltage exceeds the threshold voltage. A DC power bus incorporating the voltage detection circuit (20;80), along with an aircraft electrical system incorporating the DC power bus are also disclosed and claimed.

A method includes a step of indicating a relationship between supplied AC voltage and a threshold voltage for at least a portion of each cycle of the supplied AC voltage. A circuit for detecting disturbances in supplied alternating current (AC) is provided. The circuit includes a threshold detector coupled to a source of supplied AC. The threshold detector provides a signal indicating a relationship of the supplied AC levels to a threshold level for at least a portion of each cycle of the supplied AC.

Methods and systems of providing power to a central processing unit (CPU) provide for enhanced surge protection during CPU current consumption going from high current to low current consumption. In one approach, a circuit as a power output stage with an output node, and a controller circuit coupled to the power output stage. The controller circuit selectively switches the power output stage into a current ramp down mode based on detection of a voltage surge at the output node. The power output stage has an associated current ramp down rate. The CPU is coupled to the output node and a surge notification input of the power output stage, where the power output stage accelerates the current ramp down based on a notification signal from the CPU for a duration proportional to the change in CPU current consumption from high to low current consumption.

When the AC power failure occurs, a switchover circuit connects a rechargeable energy storage medium, such as a rechargeable battery, to the power supply of the computer for powering components of computer, and the computer is awaken. A critical battery alarm is then issued to trigger the operating system of the computer to perform a transition into a hibernation state, during which the state data of the computer are persistently stored. The energy storage medium is disconnected from the power supply after the computer system has entered hibernation.

According to an insertion method of the invention, undesired disruption of power is prevented by proper sequential deactivation and activation of the power lines (34-37) from the main power supply (26) and the auxiliary power supply (28), both of which are for providing power to multiple card units simultaneously. A live remove method also prevents undesired power disturbances. The power control switches and portions of the switch control logic may reside in the removable portion of the system architectures or on the system backplane or in the power supply.

A power supply latching circuit is responsive to the power-on reset circuit for switching on a power supply switching circuit to supply power from a power supply when the reset signal is not output. A power-down shutdown circuit, preferably under software control, and a power cutoff circuit, may be coupled to the power supply latching circuit, or alternatively the power-on reset circuit, for shutting down the power supplied from the power supply.
