The invention relates to integrated office communication systems employing a local area network (LAN) for intra-office communications. In the arrangement according to the invention, no other internal networks are needed in the office because computers (10) are connected to the local area network and telephones (5, 7) are either mobile or cordless phones for which there are low-power room-specific base stations (4, 6) in the local area network (LAN). Connections to the outside world are made via a gateway computer (1) and public cellular radio network. Inside the office, the coverage areas of the small base stations (4, 6, 8) are nanocells (4a) of one or a few rooms. A home or small office user has a similar small base station (14) which is connected to said local area network via a public communication network (15) and a gateway equipment (13).

In a telecommunication network, an ATM Adaptation Layer (2) (AAL2) signaling protocol is employed independent of the signaling bearer service being used in transport signaling messages to and from various network entities, such as mobile switching centers, radio network controllers and cell base stations in, for example, a mobile telecommunications network. This is achieved by dividing the functionality of the AAL2 signaling protocol into a number of functional sublayers including an AAL2 Signaling Common Part (CAP), a Bearer Coordination Part (BCP) and a Bearer Adaptor Part (BAP), wherein the BAP adjusts incoming and outgoing messages so that they are compatible with the AAL2 signaling protocol or the underlying signaling bearer service respectively.

A method for supporting end to end VC oriented service between mobile hosts includes protocols designed for a micro-cellular wireless environment in which mobile hosts make frequent transitions between cells. A VC rerouting procedure minimizes the effect of frequent hand-offs by extending routes and triggering a route rebuild only when performance as seen by an application degrades below a certain level. VC establishment and rerouting protocols assume the existence of separate signaling protocols for the wired and the wireless network, respectively. This minimizes the changes required to the signaling infrastructure used in the wired network while allowing the signaling in the wireless network to be customized for the unique requirements of that particular environment.

Die Reihenfolge der Übertragung der Datenpakete aus den Warteschlangen wird dabei nach warteschlangensindividuellen Kenngrößen bestimmt. Somit müssen nicht alle Dienste gleich behandelt werden, sondern können nach frei definierbaren Kenngrößen, die beispielsweise Prioritäten der einzelnen Warteschlangen sind, vorrangig oder mit geringerer Dringlichkeit bedient werden. Einem Überlaufen der Warteschlange und dem damit verbundenen Verlorengehen von Datenpaketen kann besser begegnet werden.

A multi-service subscriber radio unit includes an antenna and a transceiver which is operatively coupled to the antenna. The radio unit further includes a modem which is coupled to the transceiver and a packet control unit. The packet control unit provides multi-service packetized data for transmission (up-link) to the modem and receives multi-service packetized data from the modem (down-link). The packet control unit extracts service specific packetized data from the received multi-service packetized data and also generates the transmit multi-service packetized data from a plurality of service specific data from customer premise equipment. A plurality of service interface units are included which provide a suitable electrical interface between the customer premise equipment and the radio unit. A distribution control unit is interposed between the packet control unit and the plurality of service interface units. The distribution control unit directs service specific data to and from the service interface units.

A wireless communication system constructed according to the present invention includes at least one base station controller (BSC) that couples to a packet data network to service packet data communications between the packet data network and a mobile unit. The BSC is serviced by a mobile switching center (MSC) and services a plurality of base stations. The BSC includes circuitry that perform necessary interfacing functions to service the packet data communication requirements of the mobile unit. The mobile unit requests the wireless communication system to initiate this operation via a request made to a servicing base station. The base station forwards the request to the BSC which interacts with the MSC to initiate the packet data session. The BSC allocates a digital signal processor (DSP), processor and packet data network interface to service the packet data session for the mobile unit. The BSC thereafter sets up and services the packet data session through its connection to the servicing base station and its connection to the packet data network. Once this connection is established, the BSC continues to service the packet data session until it is terminated or until the mobile unit roams into a cell/sector serviced by another base station. Upon roaming of the mobile unit, operation will be altered. If the mobile unit roams to another cell or sector of a base station serviced by the same BSC, the path is only altered to include the newly servicing base station. However, if the mobile unit roams to a cell or sector serviced by another base station, the BSC must initiate mobility operations that will forward packet data communications to the newly servicing BSC for delivery to the mobile unit. By forwarding the packet data, the mobile unit maintains the same packet data network address.

Forward Error Correction (FEC) is implemented within an ARQ environment by using whatever acquired information has been previously obtained from RAKE processed transmitted and retransmitted signals and trying to correct the information by combining the signals and without retransmission.

The invention discloses ways of implementing a broadband wireless network based on mesh topology, optimized for delivery of data, Internet, voice and multimedia to consumers, small offices and large company premises using data interfaces such as the IP standard interface and consumer multimedia digital bus interface. The invention comprises of customer premises wireless radios with the ability of adding and dropping data via standard interface as well as routing data between multiple wireless nodes. Each network node (SR) has a MAC (Media Access Control) layer that enables the routing and insertion of packetized data between multiple network nodes and between the nodes and external LAN or WAN data networks. The invention includes an optimized algorithm for automatic node admission to the network and dropping off the network as well as an algorithm for maintaining multiple routes for route diversity. This route diversity enhances the mesh network availability, reliability and allows load balancing. The invention enables the deployment of lower cost wireless access networks with easy deployment, low maintenance, and high accessibility suitable for commercial as well as residential high bit rate data delivery.
