Abstract: The mechanism 204 prevents reversal on the torque of shaft 203 by braking two disc members 206, 207 against braking surfaces of a casing 205. Under normal operating conditions the member 206 is turned by a motor 202 controlling a load 200 in a direction which causes its drive to be transmitted through balls 221 to the member 207. In this condition minimal braking occurs. If the direction of the shaft 203 is reversed, the balls 221 force apart contiguous camming surfaces on the disc members so that their braking surfaces engage the casing to brake the shaft 203. Controlled manual release of the load under braked conditions is permitted by turning a handle 224 driving a shaft 210 which turns the member 207. Minimal braking friction during normal operations is reduced still further by creating a cushion of oil between the braking surfaces, the oil being provided by a gear pump 216 driven off the shaft 210. The braking surfaces on the casing are referenced 208, 209 and are borne upon by complementary rim surfaces of the disc members 206, 207.

Abstract: A rotational control apparatus is shown in its most preferred form according to the teachings of the present invention as a combination clutch/brake. The clutch/brake includes an interfacing member formed by first and second pressure plates rotatably mounted but reciprocally related with respect to each other. The interfacing member is reciprocated between one of first and second disk packs by an actuating rod reciprocally mounted in the housing and interconnected to ears formed on the second pressure plate. The actuating rods are reciprocated by actuation canisters located on opposite ends thereof. Each of the actuation canisters includes a piston which is reciprocated by a fluid chamber and a spring located in the fluid chamber In the first preferred form. the springs of the canisters have a compressional force which are equal and less than required to actuate the clutch/brake such that in the absence of fluid pressure, the actuating rod and interfacing member is in a normal. neutral condition. In another preferred form, the spring of one of the canisters has a compressional force sufficient to actuate the clutch/brake in a normal set condition. Fluid pressure may be electively introduced into the fluid chamber to assist the actuation force spring to return the piston to its set condition and at greater actuation forces.

Abstract: A dutch-brake assembly adaptable for use in a lawn mower having a rotary blade. The assembly is fully enclosed by a housing (34) secured to the engine. Drive shaft (14) of the engine rotates the input member (20) via keys (22). A conical annular ring (74) has an annular surface (106) engageable with surface (110) of member (20) to rotate output member (28) and the attached blade (90). Self-energizing camming surfaces (80,82) are employed to insure one-to-one drive between the input and output members. Springs (84) are used to bias ring (74) into engagement with member (20). An axially movable braking ring (54) with limited rotational movement relative to housing (34) is engageable with an annular surface (108) of ring (74). Movement of ring (54) is caused by springs (70) and ramping surfaces similar to those of (80, 82). The assembly employs the same oil used in the reservoir of the engine. Unique connecting means (36) are employed to reduce nonrotatable loads on shaft (14). Output shaft portion (88) is bushed in housing (34) in a manner to reduce nonrotating loads on shaft (14).

Abstract: A locking-type reverse input blocking clutch is provided in which the number of components is reduced, and which can be assembled efficiently. Wedge-shaped spaces 12 are defined between an inner ring 3 constituting an output-side member and an outer ring 5 constituting a fixed member, and rollers (rolling elements) 11 are disposed in the respective wedge-shaped spaces 12. Pillars 9a of a cage and pillars 10a of an annular member are inserted such that each pillar 9a of the cage and a respective one of the pillars 10a of the annular member (i) radially overlap with each other at their distal end portions, and (ii) are circumferentially opposed to the corresponding adjacent two rollers 11. When reverse input torque is applied, the inner ring 3 rotates slightly, but the annular member does not rotate due to its rotational resistance to the outer ring 5. The rollers 11 stop while abutting against the pillars 10a of the annular member, move relative to the narrow portions of the respective wedge-shaped spaces 12, and engage with the inner ring 3 and the outer ring 5, so that the output-side member is locked and rotation is not transmitted. This structure does not require a large number of elastic members as mounted in conventional reverse input blocking clutches. Therefore, compared to conventional clutches, it is possible to reduce the number of components used, and assemble the clutch efficiently.
