In a process for manufacturing a steel tube for air bags having a high strength and high toughness which can simplify cold drawing and reduce the alloy cost, a seamless steel tube is formed from a steel comprising, in mass percent, C: 0.04 - 0.20%, Si: 0.10 - 0.50%, Mn: 0.10 - 1.00%, P: at most 0.025%, S: at most 0.005%, Al: at most 0.10%, Cr: 0.01 - 0.50%, Cu: 0.01 - 0.50%, Ni: 0.01 - 0.50%, and a remainder of Fe and unavoidable impurities, and the seamless steel tube is subjected to cold drawing at least one time with a working ratio such that the reduction in area is greater than 40% to obtain predetermined dimensions, then to quench hardening by heating to a temperature of at least the Ac 3 point at a rate of temperature increase of at least 50° C per second followed by cooling at a cooling rate of at least 50° C per second at least in a temperature range of 850 - 500° C, and to tempering at a temperature of at most the Ac 1 point.

An Al-Mg-Si-based high-strength aluminum alloy extruded shape exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and ductility, and exhibits excellent hardenability during extrusion (i.e., ensures high productivity). A method for producing the same is also disclosed. The high-strength aluminum alloy extruded shape includes 0.65 to 0.90 mass% of Mg, 0.60 to 0.90 mass% of Si, 0.20 to 0.40 mass% of Cu, 0.20 to 0.40 mass% of Fe, 0.10 to 0.20 mass% of Mn, and 0.005 to 0.1 mass% of Ti, with the balance being Al and unavoidable impurities, the aluminum alloy, extruded shape having a stoichiometric Mg 2 Si content of 1.0 to 1.3 mass%, an excess Si content relative to stoichiometric Mg 2 Si of 0.10 to 0.30 mass%, and a total content of Fe and Mn of 0.35 mass% or more.

A die heater body assembly (11) for continuous extrusion apparatus substantially similar to the apparatus described in EP-A-0071 490 includes a die block (15) of non-magnetic material for the extrusion of copper tube and a bucket portion (17) forming a sliding fit in a die heater body (19). The die heater body (19) includes a coil of copper tubing in a ceramic support material provided with electric power and cooling water connections (23) to heat the bucket portion (17) by electrical induction to a temperature of approximately 700 °Celsius. To concentrate the electric induction heating effect at the bucket portion (17) low reluctance magnetic members (25) and magnetic material end blocks (33,35 and 37) direct eddy current flow toward the bucket portion (17). Weakening of the shoe as a consequence of provided the heating is limited.

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Wärmebehandlung eines gegossenen, homogenisierten und abgekühlten metallischen Pressbolzens der, bezogen auf 200 mm Durchmesser in maximal 20 Minuten auf die erforderliche Temperatur wiedererwärmt und anschließend für maximal 3 Minuten einen passiven Temperaturausgleich erworfen wird, der zu einer Temperarnrgleiclimäßigkeit von weniger als ± 10K führt. Diese Erwärmung erfolgt durch Gasbrennerflammen, sowie eine nachgeschaltete, erzwungene Konvektion mittels Heißgas-Düsenstrahlen. Der wiedererwärmte Pressbolzen wird dann an einer Schroffabkühlung mit Wasserspritzdüsen derart unterworfen, dass sich bezogen auf 200 mm Durchmesser innerhalb einer Düsenspritzdauer von maximal 30 Sekunden auf der Oberfläche des Pressbolzens eine Temperatur einstellt, die mindestens 150K unter der Presstemperatur liegt, wobei sich die gewünschte Temperaturverteilung nach Ablauf einer Temperaturausgleichszeit einstellt, die länger ist als die Düsenspritzdauer. Es werden auch Vorrichtungen zur Durchführung einer solchen Wärmebehandlung angegeben.
