An unsaturated ethylene polymer and a method for the preparation thereof are disclosed. The unsaturated ethylene polymer is prepared by low-pressure polymerisation of ethylene and at least one monomer which is copolymerisable therewith and includes a polyunsaturated comonomer having 8-14 carbon atoms and at least two non-conjugated double bonds, of which at least one is terminal. Conveniently, the polyunsaturated comonomer is an α,φ-alkadiene, preferably 1,9-decadiene. A vinylically unsaturated monomer, preferably 1-butene, may additionally be added in the polymerisation. Polymerisation is performed by means of a chromium catalyst which is based on chromium trioxide or chromate and is supported by a carrier, such as silica, and which is unmodified or modified by titanation or fluoridation.

Disclosed is an ethylene copolymer rubber which is a random copolymer rubber of (a) ethylene, (b) an α-olefin of 3 to 20 carbon atoms, (c) a nonconjugated polyene containing, in one molecule, one carbon-to-carbon double bond polymerizable by a metallocene catalyst among carbon-to-carbon double bonds, and (d) a nonconjugated polyene containing, in one molecule, two carbon-to-carbon double bonds polymerizable by the metallocene catalyst among carbon-to-carbon double bonds. The ethylene copolymer rubber has excellent moldability, high vulcanization rate, good mechanical properties such as high vulcanization strength, excellent low-temperature flexibility and thermal aging resistance. Also disclosed is a process for preparing the ethylene copolymer rubber with high activity, high conversion ratio of α-olefin and high random copolymerizability.

The invention concerns an unsaturated ethylene copolymer, a method for producing the ethylene copolymer, and the use of the ethylene copolymer in compositions for producing cross-linked structures, such as material for electric cables. In the method, ethylene and at least one monomer which is copolymerisable with ethylene and includes a polyunsaturated comonomer having a chain of at least 8 carbon atoms and at least 2 non-conjugated double bonds, of which at least one is terminal, are polymerised at a pressure of about 100-300 MPa and a temperature of about 80-300°C under the action of a radical initiator. The polyunsaturated comonomer preferably is an α,φ-alkadiene having 8-16 carbon atoms, most preferred 1,9-decadiene. Apart from the polyunsaturated comonomer, polymerisation may also involve another vinyl-unsaturated monomer, preferably containing at least one functional group selected from hydroxyl groups, alkoxy groups, carbonyl groups, carboxyl groups and ester groups. The ethylene copolymers produced have an increased degree of unsaturation, which can be used for cross-linking the ethylene copolymer or grafting reactive groups.

A process for producing EP and EPDM polymers with a reduction in fouling is provided, which process comprises polyemrizing ethylene, an alpha-olefin and a nonconjugated diolefin (if utilized) in a polymerization medium comprising a hydrocarbon diluent at a temperature of from about -50°C to about 150°C in the presence of a catalyst system comprising (a) a vanadium compound, (b) diethyl aluminum chloride, ethyl aluminum sesquichloride or ethyl aluminum dichloride and (c) an organo aluminum compound of the formula R₃Al wherein R is an alkyl group having from 8 to 12 carbon atoms and, optionally, triethyl aluminum, the molar ratio of chloride in diethyl aluminum chloride to the total aluminum content in (b) and (c) being from about 0.7:1 to about 0.95:1, the molar ratio of the chloride in ethyl aluminum sesquichloride to the total aluminum content in (b) and (c) being from about 0.7:1 to about 1.4:1 and the molar ratio of the chloride in ethyl aluminum dichloride to the total aluminum content in (b) and (c) being from about 0.7:1 to about 1.8:1 and the ratio of the mols of vanadium compound to the total mols of diethyl aluminum chloride and ethyl aluminum sesquichloride being from about 1:10 to about 1:50 to the desired conversion.
