In this satellite television broadcasting receiver, the video signal superposed with a large energy dispersion signal is inputted to the first clamping circuit (8) at a low level, to eliminate the energy dispersion signal. Thus, a room is provided in the dynamic range of the amplifier (9) at the later stage and the DG and DP of the amplifier (11) at the later stage are maintained at a satisfactory level by the second clamping circuit (10). As a result, even in the case of a satellite television broadcasting in which the level of the energy dispersion signal superposed on the video signal is large, distortion which occurs due to the nonlinearity of the amplifier can be reduced substantially so that the image can be reproduced on the screen in a satisfactory condition without an interference of flickering.

A television receiver embodying the invention includes a plurality of luminance signal sources (Y1,Y2), each capacitively coupled (C1,C2) to an input of a luminance signal selection switch (40) and each capacitor being coupled to a respective clamp circuit (42,44) with each clamp circuit having a reference voltage input coupled to a common reference voltage source (50). A sync separator (54) is provided having a first input coupled to receive the output of luminance signal selection switch and a second input coupled to a source of reference potential (51) derived from said reference voltage source. Advantageously, the overall number of clamp circuits is minimized by merging the sync separator circuit with the input signal selection clamping circuit.

A signal source (SV) applies a signal having a fixed low frequency modulation added thereto through a capacitor (CS) to a line (L) to which is connected a first clamping means comprising a first voltage controlled current amplifier or transconductor (A1), a second input of which receives a reference voltage (VR1). The transconductor (A1) output is applied through a first switch means (S1) to the line (L) which switch means (S1) is periodically closed during a defined clamp period in the signal. A filter (BP) is also connected to the line (L) having a pass band centred on the frequency of the modulation which periodically samples the signal during the clamp period. The filter (BP) output is applied to a second transconductor (A2) having a transconductance greater than that of the first transconductor (A1) a second input of which receives a second reference voltage (VR2). The output of the second transconductance (A2) is applied through second switch means (S2) to the line L periodically closed during a defined period in said signal other than the clamp signal.
