A threaded coupling is comprised of a male coupling half that includes a circumferential recess in the exterior of the male body and a female coupling half that includes a valve, a female body, and a female body extension affixed to the female body. The female body further includes a sliding sleeve movable with respect to the valve between a first position abutting and closing the valve and a second position opening the valve. The male body inter-engages the sliding sleeve and moves therewith during coupling and uncoupling. During uncoupling, the sliding sleeve remains in sealing contact against the valve such that as the male body is withdrawn from the female body the sliding sleeve moves with the male body. Separation of the coupling halves requires that an outer sleeve first release second set of detents. The coupling resists separation from vibration of the threaded surfaces.

Valved couplers 20 and gas processing components particularly suitable for ultra-high purity gas distribution for use in semiconductor manufacturing. In the couplers, a valve stem/bullnose 34 seals the aperture of the coupler 56 immediately adjacent the exterior of the coupler, so that only a minimal amount of the wetted surface of the coupler is exposed to the external environment. A gas processing component (e.g., a filter 120), or an entire integrated gas stick assembly 12, may be sealed from the exterior environment at both its inlet and outlet sides, by these valved couplers. As a result, the entire device can be purged after manufacture and left in a controlled environment during shipment and installation, reducing the need for purging after installation.

In particular, the automated pipe connection apparatus is provided with caps (111,112,114,115) for preventing intrusion of sundry bacteria into couplers (A1,A2,B1,B2) on standby and for performing washing and/or sterilization operation and also with washing- and/or sterilizing-purpose couplers (AWL,BWL). The apparatus according to this invention is superior in the operability for washing and sterilization and in the prevention of intrusion of sundry bacteria.
