The present invention provides an apparatus for dehumidifying air supplied to an enclosed space by an air conditioning unit. The apparatus includes a partition separating the interior of the housing into a supply portion and a regeneration portion. The supply portion has an inlet for receiving supply air from the air conditioning unit and an outlet for supplying air to the enclosed space. A regeneration fan creates the regeneration air stream. The apparatus includes an active desiccant wheel positioned such that a portion of the wheel extends into the supply portion and a portion of the wheel extends into the regeneration portion, so that the wheel can rotate through the supply air stream and the regeneration air stream to dehumidify the supply air stream. A heater warms the regeneration air stream as necessary to regenerate the desiccant wheel. The invention also comprises a hybrid system that combines air conditioning and dehumidifying components into a single integrated unit.

A heating and ventilation unit has a ceramic heat wheel rotatable within a housing between first and second plenums 3, 4 through which fresh and stale air, respectively, are forced to pass in a hot air ventilation system. The heat wheel is made of cordierite material such as is used in catalytic conversion systems for automobiles. It is formed with non-communicating and axially extending parallel pores having a pore density of 62 pores per sq. cm. As it rotates the heat wheel transfers to the fresh air both the heat generated by a gas burner in the second plenum, and also low grate heat contained in the stale air. The burner is housed within a combustion housing by means of which the combustion gases are confined to a generally D-shaped area of the heat wheel. The combustion housing is spaced from the walls of the second plenum to form an annular passage through which unheated stale air passes to cool the walls of the second plenum and purge any combustion gases from the pores of the heat wheel entering the first plenum. Humidification of the fresh air may be achieved by water sprayed onto the upstream surface of the heat wheel in the first plenum.

Control of the seal (13,25) of a rotary regenerative air preheater (12) is provided by a plurality of inductance sensors (S1-S8, S11-13) arranged around the path of travel of seal parts (13,25) borne by the rotating part (14,20) of the preheater (12). When these are sealing frames (13) borne on hoods (14) of a stationary matrix (11) type preheater (12) drive means such as magnetic actuators (5) are fed power signals through slip rings (4). When they are seal strips (25) on a rotating matrix (20) type, the drive means (D11-D14) are mounted on the sector plates (23,24) of the stationary body (21,22). A control circuit compares the signals received sequentially from the sensors (S1-S8, S11-S13) and drives appropriate one or ones of the drive means (5, D11-D14) to bring the sealing means (13,25) to a predetermined axial relationship, or to hold them there. The sensors(15) may be paired with comparison sensors (16) in the same environment whereby to reduce errors due to changes in temperature etc.
