There is provided a filter system for modifying an electrical signal. The filter system has an input for receiving an electrical signal to be modified, a subtraction circuit for deliver- ing a modified output signal, a direct signal part between the input and the subtraction circuit, and a modifying signal part between the input and the subtraction circuit. The modifying signal part comprises one or more inverse comb filter signal paths, where each inverse comb filter signal path has circuitry for performing an inverse comb filter function. The subtraction circuit is designed for performing a subtraction of the signals supplied via the direct signal part and the modifying signal part to thereby obtain the modified output signal. The hereby provided filter system may be used as an inverse comb filter system for modifying an audio signal in an audio system. Thus, there is also provided an audio system having an audio signal source for outputting an electrical signal representing an acoustic audio signal, and a sound source for reproducing an acoustic audio signal, said sound source having an electrical signal input and being operative to generate an acoustic audio output in response to a signal supplied to the electrical signal input. The audio system further has one or more of the inverse comb filter systems arranged between the audio signal source and the signal input of the sound source for delivering a modified signal to the electrical signal input of the sound source. The signal supplied to the subtraction circuit by the modifying signal part may be filtered by use of the one or more inverse comb filter functions.

A first-order crossover network having low-pass and high-pass filters to respectively drive first and second loudspeakers in a loudspeaker system is designed such that the phase difference at a crossover frequency between output signals of the first and second loudspeakers is no greater than 60 degrees, so that the output signals are at least partially in phase. Preferably, the phase difference should be about 40 degrees to create a near in-phase effect. The polarity in which the first loudspeaker is coupled to the first-order crossover network is an inverse of the polarity in which the second loudspeaker is coupled to the crossover network. Optionally, the input signals can be equalized to flatten the magnitude responses of the crossover network.

A thin loudspeaker is provided that produces a superior frequency response and a diffuse acoustical pattern using magnetic drivers, acoustical plates, or a combination of magnetic drivers and acoustical plates. The invention contains a specially designed crossover network and a novel enclosure design. The novel enclosure includes a septum and cross bracing which enables the invention to realize superior performance in a thin loudspeaker design. The invention encompasses methods for improving the performance of an acoustical plate which include (1) placing acoustical plate motor elements on the plate in a manner that avoids rotational, mirror, and translational symmetry, (2) using acoustical plate motor elements of different shapes and sizes to stimulate the plate, and (3) using an acoustical plate that has an asymmetric shape. All of the embodiments of the invention may be covered with a decorative cover and hung on a wall like a picture or used to form a panel in a home entertainment center.

An inverter (IB) is disposed at one bridge output stage (BR) between the output of the low-pass filter (TP) and the inputs of the summing units (SR). An audio crossover circuit for use with audio speakers is disclosed. The audio crossover circuit includes a pair of inductors that are series connected and inductively coupled and a pair of capacitors. The inductors and capacitors cooperate for achieving a low pass crossover slope in excess of 30 dB/octave within one half of an octave of the crossover frequency, thereby eliminating the need for additional inductors and capacitors. The crossover circuit also includes a resistor in series with one of the capacitors for further enhancing the crossover slope beyond an octave above the crossover frequency.
