Zum Betrieb eines Hörgerätes, das eine über einen Parametersatz einstellbare Übertragungsfunktion aufweist, wird zur Gewährleistung der Kommunikation zwischen einem Hörgerätträger (HGT) und mindestens einer Bezugsperson (BP; BP 1 , ..., BP i ) eine Bezugspersonrichtung (R; R 1 , ..., R i ) bestimmt, die durch die Position der Bezugsperson (BP; BP 1 , ..., BP i ) vom Hörgerätträger (HGT) aus gesehen definiert ist. Aufgrund der bestimmten Bezugspersonrichtung (R; R 1 , ..., R i ) wird die Übertragungsfunktion des Hörgerätes durch ändern des Parametersatzes derart eingestellt, dass die Richtungscharakteristik des Hörgerätes auf die Bezugsperson (BP; BP 1 , ..., BP i ) ausgerichtet ist. Das Verfahren zeichnet sich insbesondere dadurch aus, dass auch dann eine verbesserte Kommunikation zwischen Hörgerätträger (HGT) und Bezugsperson (BP; BP 1 , ..., BP i ) erreicht wird, wenn sich die Position des Hörgerätträger (HGT) und/oder der Bezugsperson (BP; BP 1 , ..., BP i ) ändert.

Arrival direction estimating section 15 estimates the number of mobile stations and directions thereof by processing the digital signal. Arrival direction tracking section 16 estimates a direction of a mobile station by sequential processing using an estimated result in arrival direction estimating section 15. Beam forming means 17 forms an antenna radiation beam to a direction of the estimated result in arrival direction tracking section 16.

A directgion indicating apparatus and method using a GPS receiver (10) with processor (14, 16), memory (18), input (20, 201) and indicator (22, 221, 222), uses conventional code pseudorange and carrier phase to provide a compass function. The receiver antenna (12) is desirably held stationary while the directional vectors toward the satellites and for the desired heading (21) are computed, the rate of change of carrier phase determined and future carrier phase predicted. The antenna (12) is then moved in a closed path (11) while the differences between predicted and actual carrier phase are measured and converted to positional perturbations which are resolved along the desired heading (21) and normal thereto. As the antenna (12) moves around the closed path (11), the resolved perturbations have maxima, minima or change sign and the processor (14, 16) uses this to trigger the indicator (22, 221, 222) so that the desired heading is apparent to the user (8).

A higher mode detector (2,3) outputs two higher mode components which are in orthogonal relation. These two components are combined so as to maintain the orthogonal relation. A circuit is provided having a set of at least one 90° phase difference plate (4) and one 180° phase difference plate (5) which have rotatable phase lag surfaces and which are cascade-connected. The 90° phase difference plate (4) is provided on the side of the circuit combining the two higher order components. The output of the 180° phase difference plate (5) is divided into first and second orthogonal polarization components. The first polarization component is synchronously detected with a local oscillator output synchronous with reference signals to provide a first angular error output while the output of the second polarization component is synchronously detected with signals shifted 90° in phase from the local oscillator output to thereby provide a second angular error output orthogonal to the first angular error output.

Apparatus for determining the position of a source (30) of electromagnetic radiation relative to a remote object (20) is disclosed. A multicomponent radiating means (40) of unknown orientation is provided having components centered about the origin of the source. A plurality of electrical signals are applied to the components of the multicomponent source to generate a plurality of electromagnetic fields. The electromagnetic fields are distinguishable from one another. A multicomponent receiving means (21) is disposed on the remote object. The multicomponent receiving means is provided with at least three orthogonal components (22, 23, 24) for detecting and measuring components of the electromagnetic fields transmitted from the source. The source and receiving means are adapted for operation at a separation distance sufficient to ensure that the far-field components of the electromagnetic fields are substantially greater in magnitude than the near-field components of the fields. Analyzing means (50) is associated with the receiver for converting the components of the electromagnetic fields into source position relative to the remote object without priori knowledge of the orientation of the sensor or the relative orientation of its components. The analyzing means operates open-loop with respect to the source and determines source position with at least one ambiguous combination of orientation or position.
