In the invention, a continuously variable transmission (T) for bicycles has a transmission mechanism having a plurality of link units (U1-U4) for converting rotary motion of an input shaft rotated by a pedal-operated crankshaft (12) into swinging motion, and a one-way clutch (36) for converting the swinging motion into rotary motion of an output shaft (16). The link units have drive links pivotally mounted on an eccentric ring which rotates in unison with the input shaft. The continuously variable transmission (T) is disposed between a front wheel (W F ) and a rear wheel (W R ) of a bicycle (B) in the longitudinal direction thereof and disposed either upwardly of a hypothetical plane (H2) which contains the axes of rotation of the front wheel (W F ) and the rear wheel (W R ) or upwardly of a position below and near the hypothetical plane (H2).

To that end, the gear comprises a compact housing with the crankshaft included therein, with a slidable driving first sprocket engaging, via the derailleur chain, a selected second sprocket which forms part of a series of second sprockets mutually different in diameter, located on a secondary shaft with a third sprocket mounted thereon outside the housing, which, in turn, via a roller chain, drives a fourth sprocket on the rear hub. The transmission ratio can be set with the aid of the derailleur by moving the derailleur chain over the different second sprockets while at the same time moving the driving first sprocket to a position directly opposite the selected second sprocket.

The invention is characterised in that the intermediate gear wheel (8) includes at least one first toothed stage (8b) connected to the standard crank gear (3) and the diameter of which is not greater than that of said crank gear (3) and a second toothed stage (8a) connected to the driving pinion (6) of the wheel (7) and the diameter of which is greater than that of said crank gear (3), so as to obtain a velocity gain of the machine for a given torque supplied by the user.

Said regulating mechanism is rotationally arranged on the wheel axle (8), is coupled to the wheel hub on the entry side, and is coupled on the exit side to an actuating element (6) provided for multiple gear shifting. A reduction gear is arranged between the wheel hub (4) and the drive element (12) of the regulating mechanism, said drive element being located on the entry side. The movement of the regulating mechanism (16) located on the exit side is moved outward via a regulating element (76) which is arranged in the wheel axle and which can be longitudinally displaced.
