The crank assembly is rotatable about a first axis and the resistance device provides a resistance force opposing the rotational movement of the crank assembly. The crank assembly includes actuating means for enabling the user to impart the rotational movement against the resistance force. The position of the first axis is moveable between at least a first position which facilitates actuation of the actuating means by the user's feet in order to provide lower body exercise and a second position which facilitates actuation of the actuating means by the user's hands in order to provide upper body exercise.

A foot link includes a rearward portion that is constrained to move in an orbital path approximately parallel to the longitudinal axis and a forward portion that reciprocally engages the guide track. A swing arm is a pivotally connected to the frame, the swing arm having an upper portion extending above the pivotal connection and a lower portion disposed below the pivotal connection. An engagement mechanism having a first portion coupled to the lower portion and a second portion coupled to the forward portion of the foot link, such that a rearward force applied to the upper portion will produce a force on the forward portion having a downward component. An arm enabling/disabling mechanism is positioned on the elongate swing arm below the pivotal connection. The arm enabling/disabling mechanism can be effectuated by a user without the user interrupting exercise.

An exercise system and method is utilized with a foot pedal (10) of a stationary bicycle to exercise various body parts including the user's legs, arms, chest, shoulders, back, and abdomen for a complete body workout. The exercise system preferably includes an adapter (100), and a plurality of user interfaces. The adapter is configured to releasably couple one of the foot pedals of the stationary bicycle and one of the plurality of user interfaces. A foot holder (200) serves as one of the plurality of user interfaces. Preferably, the foot holder securely and releasably retains the user's foot. While in use, the user's foot is axially aligned with an axle of the foot pedal, and is capable of supplying force to the foot pedal on both the downstroke and upstroke portions of the food pedal's rotation. An external attachment (300, 400) also serves as one of the plurality of user interfaces. The external attachment is preferably designed to transmit force from the user's legs, arms, feet or hands to the foot pedal of the stationary bicycle. Additionally, the external attachment can also transmit force from the user's legs, arms, feet or hands to this foot pedal. Similar to the foot holder, the external attachment is also capable of supplying force to the foot pedal on both the downstroke and the upstroke portions of the foot pedal's rotation.

A variable resistance device (100) is adapted to be incorporated in an exercise machine to provide variable resistance. The device has a primary fluid chamber (1). A rotating mechanism (2) rotates within the primary chamber (1). The rotation mechanism (2) upon rotation encounters a degree of resistance dependent on the amount of fluid in the primary chamber (1). A secondary chamber (3) is positioned within or proximate the primary chamber (1). The secondary chamber (3) achieves and maintains an appropriate amount of the fluid in the primary chamber (1) to provide a selected degree of resistance for the exercise machine. Fluid flows through the primary chamber (1) into the secondary chamber (3) and then back into the primary chamber (1). Variable control of the flow of fluid serves to establish and maintain the appropriate amount of fluid in the primary chamber required for a certain degree of resistance; and can provide differing degrees of resistance for the exercise machine.

The apparatus includes a movable carriage made of a rigid frame tha moves along the rail members between the head and foot ends against one or more resistance members connected to the carriage and the foot end of the frame. Each of the rail members includes a longitudianl slot therein fro receiving a foot support bar assembly. The rail members and head and foot end members are generally each metal tubular box extrusions and the rail members telescopically retract. Roller wheels attached to the carriage move along the top of the rail members and guide wheels move along the inside of the rail members. The invention further includes shoulder stops on the carriage that can be adjusted to a horizontal position so that the apparatus may be compactly stored.

Es wird ein Trainingsgerät mit einer Kurbel für Bewegungsbehinderte vorgeschlagen, wobei an den Kurbelarmen Pedale oder dergleichen zur Verbindung mit Beinpaaren und/oder Armpaaren der trainierenden Person vorgesehen sind, und das Trainingsgerät eine Einrichtung zur Regelung und/oder Steuerung der Kurbelbewegung aufweist. Bei einer ersten erfindungsgemäßen Lösung ist eine Elektronikeinheit vorgesehen, welche die Kurbelbewegung innerhalb einer Umdrehung in wenigstens zwei Abschnitte unterteilt, und daß in Bezug auf diese Abschnitte die Elektronikeinheit unterschiedliche Funktionen für die Kurbelbewegung vorgibt. Bei einer zweiten erfindungsgemäßen Lösung ist ebenfalls eine Elektronikeinheit vorgesehen, welche die Kurbelbewegung innerhalb einer Umdrehung in wenigstens zwei Abschnitte unterteilt, wobei jedoch alternativ zur vorigen Lösung die Elektronikeinheit zur abschnittsbezogenen Messung von wenigstens einem Kurbelparameter, mit dem eine Aussage über das Tretverhalten möglich ist und zur Anzeige des Kurbelparameters und/oder eines darauf basierenden Parameters in Bezug auf den zugehörigen Abschnitt ausgestaltet ist.
