The invention concerns pulse echo distance measurement and in particular a method and apparatus for calculating such a distance by sensing multiple reflections of a given pulse signal. By sensing multiple reflections, and not just the primary echo, internal time delays which would otherwise cause systematic errors may be simply eliminated and the multiple readings obtained may be utilised to provide system self-diagnostic checks, eliminate spurious information and provide an accurate measure of distance. A particular advantage of the method is that very small distances between sensor and target may be measured.

Ein Signal, das den Empfänger als über mehrere Schwingungen ansteigende und wieder abfallende Wellengruppe erreicht, wird während eines Meßfensters abgetastet, digitalisiert, abgespeichert und mit einem Referenzsignal, das vorzugsweise einem bei ungestörter Übertragung abgespeicherten Empfangssignal entspricht, korreliert. In Abhängigkeit von der Lage des Meßfensters und der Lage des Maximums der Einhüllenden der Kreuzkorrelationsfunktion wird ein Nulldurchgang der Wellengruppe selektiert und der Schnittpunkt einer interpolierenden Funktion mit Bezugspotential ermittelt. In einem ersten Schritt wird zur ungefähren Ermittlung der zeitlichen Lage der Wellengruppe ein größeres Meßfenster und eine geringere Abtastrate, in einem zweiten Schritt zur Nulldurchgangsselektion und genauen Detektion ein kleineres Meßfenster mit höherer Abtastrate gewählt. Die Erfindung wird angewandt bei Ultraschall-Durchflußmessern.

An ultrasonic ranging device suitable for use as a sensor on a mobile robot, the device comprising a transmitter (9) for transmitting in a scanned fashion a beam of ultrasonic energy over a target region of interest (11), a detector (13, 14) for detecting return ultrasonic energy comprising reflections of the transmitted beam from the target region and a signal processor (17, 19) for enhancing the signal detected by the detector, which processor comprises a correlator (19) for correlating the signal output from the detector with a reference signal wherein the reference signal is a representation of the actual signal which has been produced by that detector when the transmitted beam has reflected at normal incidence from a plane reference target surface of interest, the processor also including a computer store (21) for storing said signal representation and applying the same as a reference signal to said correlator (19) during detection of a signal representing reflection from a target to be detected.

The invention concerns a method and device for non-destructive testing. Ultrasonic pulses are fed into the object under test. Ultrasonic waves emerging from the object are detected by an ultrasonic test head (12), converted into electrical signal and amplified. The signals are then sampled to produce measurement values, which are digitized and stored. From the digitized sampled values of the signals a function is obtained by interpolation, by means of which the peak values of the ultrasonic waves and/or the time of propagation of the wave at the peak is determined.

Acoustic level sensing apparatus is provided, in which pulses of acoustic energy are transmitted by an electrically energized transducer towards a surface to be sensed, and the electrical output from the transducer following the pulse received by a receiver is digitized and analyzed by a programmed microprocessor to detect a return echo from the surface, so as to produce a digitized echo profile. The digitized echo profile is enhanced by removing narrow peaks likely to correspond with certain types of spurious echo (REMOVE_NARROW_ECHOES_F0), and narrow valleys which may represent fragmentation of a wanted echo (REFORM_FRAGMENTED_ECHOES_F0). Echoes are identified by comparing the profile with a time varying threshold generated derived from a linear regression performed on part of the echo profile (TVT_IN_F2), various different types of comparison being performed and their results combined (ALF_ALGORITHM) prior to selecting the most likely true echo on the basis of the combined results (SELECT_BEST_ECHO_FROM_FILE_3).
