Disclosed are a printer and a method of switching ribbon tracks of an ink ribbon. The printer uses an ink ribbon (5) having a plurality of ribbon tracks (T₁, T₂, T₃, T₄) of the same color and properly switches the ribbon tracks (T₁, T₂, T₃, T₄) from one to another in a printing operation. This ribbon-track switching method switches the ribbon tracks (T₁, T₂, T₃, T₄) from one to another when a printing page is changed or an equivalent operation is executed. It is therefore possible to suppress a decrease in printing density to thereby prolong the service life of the ink-ribbon cartridge. Since the ribbon tracks (T₁, T₂, T₃, T₄) are switched from one to another when a printing page is changed or an equivalent operation is executed, thus inhibiting the switching of the ribbon tracks (T₁, T₂, T₃, T₄) on the same page, the printing density on the same page becomes even and the printing quality can be improved.

A web guidance mechanism (14) for automatically centering a web (12) in a thermal printer has an elongated base member (22) with first and second end portions each defining a slot (24,26). A crank (28) is rotatably mounted on the base member (22) and has slider arms (30,34) attached thereto. Web guides (32,36) are mounted on the distal end portions of the slider arms (30,34) and are engagable with the slots (24,26) for lateral movement. A coil spring (38) biases the web guides (32,36) towards one another to create two normally equal but opposite centering edge forces (F1,F2) so that lateral movement of the web (12) does not occur until twice the nominal edge force is applied to the web (12).

Means to control feeding of a multi-strike ink ribbon (19) housed in a reversible cassette (12) is disclosed. The cassette carries a magnetisable element (20; 30,31) and when the cassette is inserted in printing apparatus (10, 26) the element is located in operative alignment with a magnetic sensing device (21; 32,33) and with an electromagnet (25; 34). Upon insertion of the cassette, the polarity of magnetisation is sensed and provided the polarity is correct printing is enabled. If the polarity is incorrect printing is disabled. When the end of the ink ribbon is sensed, the electromagnet (25; 34) is energised to reverse the polarity of magnetisation of the element (20) so that when the cassette is removed and re-inserted with reversed orientation, the correct polarity of magnetisation is sensed and printing is enabled. A counter may be provided to limit the number of permitted reversals of the cassette.

A compact printer capable using any of a plurality of printing tracks or colors of an ink ribbon is disclosed in which line drive means for driving a print head (1) are also used for operating ribbon shift means in order to select a desired printing track or color. Preferably, the stroke of a reciprocating movement of the print head is divided into a printing region within which printing on a recording paper (7) is performed, and two non-printing end regions. The ribbon shift means is operated in response to the line drive means moving the print head into a non-printing end region. Moving the print head into one end region causes a track setting mechanism to set a desired printing track, whereas moving the print head into the opposite end region causes a track resetting mechanism (50) to release the track setting by the track setting mechanism. A cam member having a stepped cam face provided on a pivotally supported setting lever which is operated by engagement with the print head is used as the track setting mechanism. Also disclosed is a control method for controlling this printer such as to allow multi-color printing.

A printing machine includes a print head and a set of sensors adapted to accurately determine the relative position between the print head and a receiver (print media) onto which an image is to be formed. Any dislocation of the receiver from a predetermined nominal position is translated by a data conditioner into correction signals. These correction signals are integrated with nominal incoming image data directed to the print head. The print head then prints an image that compensates for positional variation of the receiver so that a resultant image is properly aligned with the receiver.
