The present invention relates to the production of photothermally crystallizable, chemically-machinable glass-ceramic articles exhibiting coefficients of thermal expansion over the temperature interval of 20°-400°C between 120-160 x 10 -7 / o C. Base glass articles having compositions consisting essentially, in weight percent, of 5.5-15% Li 2 O, 2-25% A1 2 0 3 , the weight ratio Al 2 O 3 :Li 2 O being less than 1.7:1, 60-85% Si0 2 , and at least one photosensitive metal in the indicated proportion selected from the group of 0.001-0.03% gold, computed as Au, 0.001 -0.3% silver, computed as AgCl, and 0.001-1% copper, computed as Cu 2 O are first exposed to ultraviolet radiations to develop a latent image therein, then heated to a temperature between the annealing and softening points thereof to generate metallic nuclei therein and the growth of lithium metasilicate particles thereon, and, finally, heated to a temperature in excess of 700°C, but less than 800°C, to effect an essentially crystalline article, including the conversion of a portion of the lithium metasilicate crystals to lithium disilicate. Quartz and/or cristobalite will also be formed.

A glass-ceramic having a lithium aluminosilicate crystal phase with a very low coefficient of thermal expansion and a residual glassy phase of substantial amount and higher coefficient of expansion, which can be a borosilicate or boroaluminosilicate glass. The two phases form a dilatant system wherein the termal expansion curve changes markedly in character at a transition point in the range of 500-750° C., the crystal phase dominating below that temperature and the glass phase controlling at high temperatures.

The present invention provides a microcrystalline glass and microcrystalline glass product with excellent mechanical properties, microcrystalline glass product, the components of which, expressed in weight percent, contain: SiO 2 : 65~80%; Al 2 O 3 : below 5%; Li 2 O: 10~25%; ZrO 2 : 5~15%; P 2 O 5 : 1~8%. Through the reasonable component design, the microcrystalline glass product obtained by the present invention have excellent mechanical properties.

A Li 2 O-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -based crystallized glass in which yellow coloring caused by TiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , etc. is prevented is provided. The Li 2 O-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -based crystallized glass contains: in a mass basis, SnO 2 : 0% to 5%; and HfO 2 +Ta 2 O 5 : 0.01% to 10%.
