The present invention relates to the use of selected modified polyesters known for their soil-release properties as cleaning agents for cotton-containing fabrics, thus being able to provide a cleaning effect on such fabrics after only one laundering cycle, as compared to several cycles when functioning in the soil-release agent mode. The present invention also encompasses detergent compositions containing said modified polyesters and a cellulase enzyme, or a co-dispersing agent and/or a soil-antiredeposition agent.

A process and apparatus for treating cellulosic fiber containing fabrics to improve durable press and shrinkage resistance includes using steam (36) as a vehicle to supply vaporized liquid cellulosic cross-linking agent and vaporized liquid catalyst to a reaction chamber (10) in which the fabric articles (30) are treated by cross-linking the cellulose. Normally liquid cross-linking agent (46) and liquid catalysts (52) are directly injected into a stream of treating steam to cause vaporization of the cross-linking agent and catalyst. Alternatively, a steam driven ejector type pump (42) is utilized to entrain and vaporize liquid cross-linking agent and liquid catalyst in a flowing stream of steam (32) supplied to the reaction chamber. Gaseous ammonia (52) may also be supplied to the reaction chamber to condition the cellulosic material containing fabric before cross-linking.

A fabric treatment composition comprising an aqueous base, one or more water-soluble amphoteric fabric conditioning materials and a co-active material having an HLB of between 10.0 and 12.0. The weight ratio of amphoteric material to co-active being from 5:1 to 50:1. The amphoteric material is preferably an amine oxide. The composition may also comprise from 1-75% of a water- insoluble cationic fabric treatment compositions.

The addition of up to 15 percent by weight of a polyoxyalkylene derivative to a fatty acid derived dialkylamido methyl amino quarternary compound, permits the atomization of the latter in conventional equipment. The resulting fabric softening product is in the desireable form of a free flowing solid, water dispersible powder.
