The inlet (7) for the liquid bath (3) also acts as the inlet for the gas mixture to be fed into the reaction chamber and the outlet (10) also acts as an outlet for the residual gas, and both the inlet (7) and the outlet (10) lie below the liquid level (8) in the reaction chamber (6) the pressure in the reaction chamber being controllable.

The method includes the steps of preparing a mixture of oxygen and liquid, compressing the mixture so that the oxygen dissolves in the liquid to form an oxygen-enriched liquid, delivering the oxygen-enriched liquid to a catheter having an internal diameter and length which retains the oxygen in solution and prevents the formation of bubbles, positioning the catheter in the environment of interest, and injecting the oxygen-enriched liquid into the environment through the catheter, such that the environment rapidly becomes enriched in oxygen. The apparatus includes a catheter with drawn silica tubing (20) having narrowly defined passages through which oxygen-enriched liquid passes to oxygenate blood plasma (22).

The surface recombiner (R) has catalytic flat bodies (1) over which the gas/vapour mixture containing the hydrogen to be removed is passed and also a casing (2) surrounding and supporting the flat bodies (1). According to the invention, the casing (2) has at least one permanently open gas inlet aperture (3) and a permanently open gas outlet aperture (4) which intercommunicate via a gas flow path inside the casing. The catalytic flat bodies (1) are arranged inside the casing (2) after the gas inlet aperture (3) in the gas flow path. The casing (2) preferably has the dimensions of a space heater in which the gas inlet aperture (3) is preferably arranged in the lower part and directed downwards and the gas outlet aperture (4) is arranged in the upper region of a front panel (2b) of the casing (2). The device makes it possible advantageously to form a dual system together with catalytic H2 igniters and H2 spark igniters, which is suitable for nuclear power stations.

The heat pipes (10) are disposed within the heat exchanger (2) with their evaporator portion (20) in the first gas duct (6) and their condenser portion (30) in the second gas duct (8). An auxiliary plenum chamber (40) is provided laterally adjacent the second gas duct (8) to receive the hydrogen gas collection chamber (80) of each heat pipe. The hydrogen gas collection chambers (80) are selectively heated either by a heating coil (90) wrapped about the hydrogen gas collection chamber (80) of each heat pipe, or by heating the interior of the auxiliary plenum chamber (40).

A catalytic oxidation reactor (10) for gaseous mixtures composed of oxygen and at least one combustible gas in contact therewith comprises a reactor (12) in communication with a coolant contained in a cooling element (21). A first gas-permeable layer (18) containing a catalyst (19) for the oxidation reaction is arranged in the reactor (12). On the side facing the gaseous mixture, the first layer (18) has a second gas-permeable layer (20) and on the other side a third layer (17) impermeable to gases and liquids and in thermal contact with the coolant. The reactor therefore operates on the countercurrent principle (arrows 23, 24).
