The number of poles of the position control windings is different from the number of poles of the stator windings. With divided end rings (56, 58), the cage conductors (54) form closed circuits with zero mutual inductance between the cage conductors (54) and the position control windings. For example, the stator includes torque generating four-pole stator windings and two-pole position control windings. The rotor (50) indudes four-pole windings with particular conductors (54) being short-circuited by circumferentially divided end rings (56, 58).

An induction motor rotor is manufactured by assembling copper end ring laminations 30, 35 on each axial end of a core assembly 15 with slots 20, 34 aligned and copper rotor bars 40 in the slots and induction brazing the ends of the copper bars to the copper end ring laminations. The forming of the end rings by laminations greatly reduces machining and scrap; and the use of induction heating reduces exposure of the core assembly to the high heat of brazing.
