Disclosed are processes for tinting hydrogel materials, such as contact lenses, by dissolving a leuco sulfate ester of a vat dye in a compatible monomer solution, adding an oxidizing initiator to the monomer solution, and oxidizing and polymerizing the monomer solution and dye in the same solution. In one aspect, the oxidation and polymerization are conducted simultaneously whereas in another embodiment, the oxidation of the soluble leuco sulfate ester of a vat dye to the insoluble vat dye and polymerization are conducted sequentially in the same reaction medium.

Suitable adsorbents are characterized as having a higher affinity for the leachable materials than either the hydratable polymer or the solvent employed in the solution. A multifocal contact lens has diffractive power arising from a series of concentric zones each providing an asymmetric retardation of light across the zone width to direct light predominantly into a required order and sign of diffraction. At least some of the concentric zones are shaped so that the step height varies so that it is different in one region (A) of the lens from that in another region (B), whereby the intensity of light associated with an image observed by diffraction at one order in that region (A) of the lens is greater than the light intensity associated with the same image when observed at the same order through another region (B) of the lens.

A method of manufacturing a contact lens with an iris simulating pattern by moulding comprising applying to the mould at least two differing designs so as to form an overall pattern. This overall pattern is transferred to the surface or surfaces of the contact lens during moulding and curing thereof, where the designs transferred interact with each other to substantially cover the iris and produce a coloured natural simulation of the iris of the eye when in use.

The disclosure of this application is directed to injection molding methods and apparatus for the production of casting molds for toric lenses having prism ballast oriented properly with respect to the cylinder axis of the toric curves. The application discloses the use of a calibrated rotatable ring mechanism within the injection molding body, for producing a slot (16) or other alignment means on the lens casting mold at a point which is offset a predetermined number of degrees from the axis of the toric curve being formed in the casting mold. When the casting mold containing a newly cast lens is mounted on a precision lathe, the mating of the slot with a permanent ridge on the lathe spud ensures that the mold seats on the lathe at the same established place each time with respect to the position of the cutting tool. The offset between the toric axis and the position of the cutting tool has already been established, and therefore there is no need for the lathe operator to make any measurements or resetting of the cutting tool.

A dispenser for dispensing sterile solution which includes a valve means to control the dispensing of the sterile solution from a container. The valve means comprises a solution outlet means, and an air inlet opening having associated therewith a filter membrane to filter the air passing into the container. When dispensing solution force is applied to the container in order to achieve this, and this force causes the solution outlet means to open and prevents access of the solution to the air inlet opening. Now when the force is relieved a partial vacuum is formed in the container which causes the solution outlet means to close and air is drawn into the container via the air inlet opening and through the filter membrane.
