摘要: A carrier (1,101) bears data in the form of one or more holographic optical elements (HOEs) (4,104) representing e.g. identification data on an access-control card or authentication data for documents or goods. In Fig 1, each HOE (4) is adapted to couple into the structure of the carrier light directed at a selected angle from an emitter (9) in a reading apparatus and to direct that light within the carrier at an angle such that it is transmitted through the carrier by a process involving total internal reflection at an exposed surface thereof. The light can therefore be coupled out of the carrier at a location spaced from the HOE (4) through an element (11) of selected refractive index placed into contact with the surface of the carrier, and sensed by an associated detector (12). Alternatively in Fig 7 there is a light path from an emitter (110) coupling light into the carrier through an element (111) of selected refractive index, with the light being transmitted by total internal reflection to a HOE (104) which couples it out to a detector (112). In either case, detection of light from one location on the carrier when it is illuminated at another location therefore signals the presence of the HOE (4,104) which otherwise remains completely invisible. The presence or absence of HOEs at specified positions along a track or in other forms of array can therefore be used to represent data bits, to be detected along parallel tracks or at different array positions by virtue of the light transmission through the carrier, making fraudulent reproduction or imitation of the data very difficult.

摘要: A data acquisition system, e.g. for an intrusion alarm system, has a plurality of distributed sensors 3 connected in sets to nodal units or concentrators 2. The concentrators are interrogated by clock pulses broadcast on a line 6 from a central control unit l and when each concentrator's address is reached it transmits back to the central unit over a line 7 a set of pulse signals the widths of which represent the voltage levels of the respective sensors 3 connected to it. Analogue sensor outputs may thus be transmitted. The sensor outputs are also preferably integrated at the concentrators 2, prior to pulse-conversion, over a period corresponding to a complete cycle of the local mains supply, thus to eliminate any mains interference.

摘要: Stacking apparatus for stacking banknotes or other sheets includes a single slotted-wheel (14) that is rotated to receive sheets (N) fed successively thereto. The sheets are retained in slots (13) of the wheel (14) so as to be carried round with the wheel (14) into abutment with stripper means (16) which dislodges the sheets from the slots (13) so that they stack one upon the other (S). The stripper means has abutments on both sides of the single wheel (14), and may be a plate (16) which is slotted to extend up on both sides of the, wheel to provide said abutments and which also provides an abutment against which the stripped sheets fall in register upon one another in orderly stack (S). The wheel (14) may be a plastics moulding with the slots defined by individual curved-tines (19) moulded as one with the remainder of the wheel, and may be mounted centrally of the sheet-feed path.

摘要: The retractable protective-screen (3) of a through-the- wall automated-teller machine is in the form of a curved metal plate (10) guided at its side-edges (15), that is driven through a slot (16) in a facia-wall (17) of the machine in both retraction and extension via a single rack-and-pinion coupling (20,21). The rack (21) is a length of powered-drive belting (22) clamped upon a foam-rubber backing (24) to the inside of the plate (10) centrally of the two side-edges (15). Nylon blocks (18) clipped to the four corners of the plate (10) run in two pairs or arcuate channel guide-pieces (11,13), the blocks (18) to the front of the plate (10) running solely in the guide-pieces (11) respectively of one pair mounted in front of the facia-wall (17), and the blocks (18) to the rear of the plate (10) running solely in the guide-pieces (13) respectively of the other pair mounted to the rear of the wall (17).

摘要: A teller machine which includes a dispenser (8) for dispensing banknotes or other items for delivery to a customer in accordance with a customer-requested transaction, is switchable (19) between a first, teller-assist mode in which the dispenser (8) dispenses under human control exercised from a teller's station (2), and a second, automated mode in which dispensing is under programmed control in accordance with customer requests entered into the machine from a customer's station (3). The two stations (2,3) are located close to one another, in particular opposite across a counter-top (6), and the dispenser (8) dispenses to a position within reach from both stations (2,3), in particular into a pan (5) sunk into the counter-top (6), whereby delivery to the customer of dispensed items when the machine is operating in its first mode is within the personal influence of the human teller in the provision of personal service to customers while the teller's station (2) is manned.

摘要: Intrusion-detection units (1) which are linked in an alarm system to a central control unit (3) by cable (2), each include a coder circuit (8) responsive to opening of intrusion- and tamper-alarm contacts (5, 6) to change the magnitudes of current flow in respective alarm and tamper signalling lines (14, 15) of the cable (2). Current is supplied to the tamper-signalling line (15) in the circuit (8) via the collector-emitter path of a transistor (16) from the positive supply-line (10) of the cable (2), until the alarm-contacts (5) in its collector circuit open, whereupon current supply of the same magnitude is continued to that line (15) via the base-emitter path from the alarm-signalling line (14). The increase in current in the latter line (14) is detected, to indicate the alarm condition, in a decoder circuit (9) of the control unit (3) by operational amplifiers (36, 40) that respond to the consequent tendency for change in potential of the line (14). The decoder circuit (9) also includes operational amplifiers (22, 23) to detect change in current magnitude in the tamper-signalling line (15) for indicating the tamper condition, such change occurring upon opening of the tamper-contacts (6) of any coder circuit (8) or any breaking or shorting together of the lines (10, 11, 14, 15) of the cable (2). Opening of the tamper-contacts (6) interrupts a current-supply path that is connected to the tamper-signalling line (15) in parallel with the collector-emitter path of the coder-circuit transistor (16), or alternatively interrupts the emitter circuit of that transistor (16). A resistor (20) is connected across the supply-lines (10, 11) to increase current supply to the tamper-line (5) via a diode (21) if the negative supply-line (11) is broken.
