A vapour recovery nozzle (10) is disclosed in which the main body (11) of the nozzle has the vapour passage (36) located above the fluid passage (16), so that the fluid valve (22) is separated from the top of the nozzle by the vapour passage. Thus the valve may only be removed through the bottom of the nozzle by removing the trigger mechanism (73) and removing the vacuum tripping mechanism (81) which is also connected to the trigger mechanism. Removal of the tripping mechanism is also made easily determinable by the use of a soft aluminium seal (123) over the top opening of the trigger mechanism. The tripping mechanism is responsive to displacement of the vapour recovery shroud (30) to prevent dispensing fuel unless the nozzle is in the fill tank. Other improvements include an improved trigger mechanism having a camming surface (80) to engage the stem (55) of the fluid valve (22).

A vapour valve (30) is useful for example in a vapour recovery nozzle of the type used in dispensing fuel to motor vehicles in which vapour from the vehicle fuel tank is returned to the fuel reservoir, the valve closing the vapour passage to the fuel reservoir when fuel is not being dispensed. The valve (30) comprises a body having a vapour passage and a liquid passage, the passages having first and second chambers (42, 47) separated by a thin wall. A poppet (51) is positioned in the first chamber (42), is movable between a closed position (shown in Fig. 2) in which flow of vapour is blocked and an open position, and has a permanent magnet (55) which is adjacent the thin wall. A closure (56) is positioned in the second chamber (47), is moved from a resting closed position (shown in Fig. 2) restricting flow of liquid to an open position in response to flow of liquid, and has a permanent magnet (58) adjacent the thin wall. The magnets (55, 58) are arranged so that, when the closure (56) is in or moves to its closed position, the magnetic forces therebetween will cause the poppet (51) to remain in or move to its closed position.

An apparatus for monitoring the spatial position of a reference point (31) relative to a predetermined origin (0'), the reference point being located on an articulated marine loading arm (10) having a plurality of pivotally interconnected fluid conduits (14, 23, 26) forming pivot angles at the interconnections of the conduits, includes segments (D5, D7, D8) subtended by the pivot angles and means (52, 53, 54) are provided for sensing lengths of the segments as the loading arm articulates. The sensing means generate electrical signals proportional to the segment lengths and a computer (65) receives the electrical signals and calculates the position of the reference point therefrom based on the known geometry of the loading arm.
