The first and second pressure sensors (52, 54) are in communication with the controller (38) which is configured to control the flow control valve (48) to reduce the flow of fire suppression agent to the cargo compartment (12) when at least one of a difference in the pressures sensed by the first and second pressure sensors (40, 42)), a ratio of the pressures sensed by the first and second pressure sensors (52, 54) or a rate of change in a pressure increase measured by the first pressure sensor (52) exceeds a respective predetermined value.

A control assembly 6 is described for controlling the flow of gas from a gas generating cartridge 21 into a gas bottle (not shown) to be charged and whose neck is inserted into a recess 16. The bottle cannot be inserted until a latch 44 has been pushed upward by means of a button 50 and until an operating lever (not shown) has been rotated sufficiently to turn a spindle portion 64 through 90 o into a recess 66. The button is then released to latch the bottle and the operating lever closes a micro-switch in series with a second micro-switch which is only closed when the neck of the bottle is in recess 16. These micro-switches electrically energise an ignition unit in the cartridge 20 and gas generation starts. Gas passes through a sintered metal filter 28 and through a bore in a piston 78 and a pin 80 into recess 16, escaping around the outside of the gas bottle neck thus purging contaminants. The gas pressure moves piston 78 and pin 80 to the right and the distal end of the pin sealingly enters the bottle. Gas pressure opens a check valve in the bottle neck and charges the bottle. When peak pressure is reached, the check valve automatically closes. The operating lever then moves spindle portion 64 clockwise which opens a depressurising valve 82, allowing any still-present gas in manifold 74 to pass via bore 85 to the underside of piston 78, thus withdrawing pin 80. Button 50 can now be depressed to enable the charged bottle to be removed.
