    摘要: A rotatable cutting tool has a shank portion for coupling to a tool driving device and a cutting portion to which is attached at least one support member for retention of a replaceable cutting element. The support member is so arranged to permit displacement of at least the portion thereof retaining the cutting element whereby the position of the cutting element relative to the body of the cutting tool may be changed by such displacement. A totally enclosed hydraulic force multiplier is mounted within an internal cavity of the cutting tool. The force multiplier is responsive to a control force to effect the displacement of the support member, the control force advantageously supplied by application of pneumatic pressure.

    摘要: An indexable threading and turning insert with integral pressed-in chip breakers, having a threading insert portion and a turning insert portion. Each of the threading insert portion and the turning insert portion has, respectively, an integral pressed-in chip breaker having ideal chip management characteristics. The indexable threading and turning insert has a substantially diamond shape having a first planar face, an opposite second planar face, and first, second, third and fourth insert faces extending between the first and second planar faces, wherein the threading insert portion is contiguous a first corner formed by intersection of the first and second planar faces and the turning insert portion is contiguous a second corner formed by intersection of the third and fourth insert faces, the second corner being located opposite the first corner. The threading insert portion is characterized by a first cutting edge formed at the intersection of the first insert face and a first land and a second cutting edge formed at the intersection of the second insert face and a second land. Each of the first and second cutting edges is provided with a plurality of noses separated by gullets. First and second integral, pressed-in chip breakers, each in the form of a raised island, the incident face contour thereof corresponding to the nose-and-gullet contour of the respective cutting edge adjacent thereto. Preferably, the incident face contour has scalloped portions adjacent the noses. The turning insert portion is characterized by third and fourth cutting edges located, respectively, at the intersection of a third land with the third and fourth insert faces, and at the intersection of a fourth land with the third and fourth insert faces. Third and fourth integral, pressed-in chip breakers, each in the form of a raised island corresponding to the contour of the respective cutting edge adjacent thereto, preferably having a double-stepped, wing backed shape in registry with respect to the second corner.

    摘要: A dense cermet article including about 80-95% by volume of a granular hard phase and about 5-20% by volume of a metal phase. The hard phase is a carbide, nitride, carbonitride, oxycarbide, oxynitride, or carboxynitride of a cubic solid solution selected from W-Ti, W-Hf, W-Nb, W-Ta, Zr-Ti, Hf-Ti, Hf-Zr, V-Ti, Nb-Ti, Ta-Ti, or Mo-Ti. The metal phase consists essentially of a combination of nickel and aluminum having a ratio of nickel to aluminum of from about 90:10 to about 70:30 by weight, and 0-5% by weight of an additive selected from titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, cobalt, boron, and/or carbon. The article may be produced by presintering the hard phase - metal phase component mixture in a vacuum or inert atmosphere at about 1475°-1675°C, then densifying by hot isostatic pressing at a temperature of about 1575°-1675°C, in an inert atmosphere, and at about 34-207 MPa pressure. Limiting the presintering temperature to 1475°-1575°C and keeping the presintering temperature at least 50°C below the hot pressing temperature produces an article of gradated hardness, harder at the surface than at the core. In this gradated product, the hard phase may alternatively be a carbide, nitride, carbonitride, oxycarbide, oxynitride, carboxynitride, or boride of an element selected from Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, or B.

    摘要: Processes are disclosed in which cemented carbide parts, having a wide range of initial carbon levels, and a wide range of sizes, can be carburized to a critical carbon level, and then slow cooled at various rates, to yield stratified enriched zones in the near-surface region of said parts. The enriched zones are characterized by the cobalt content decreasing, and the microhardness increasing, continuously through the enriched zones, and approaching values characteristic of the interior. The combination of stratified enriched zones in the near surface region and the 6% binder interior provide the toughness and deformation resistance required for heavy roughing applications.
    A wide variety of cemented carbides, having different compositions and WC grain sizes, can also be carburized and slow cooled using the same techniques to yield stratified binder enriched zones having the same hardness profiles and cobalt content profiles as described above.
