A microwave cavity filter (100) is configured for operation in the dual TE 22N mode to realize a very high Q factor at very high frequency ranges. The microwave filter is formed from using one or more cylindrical cavities (60a,60b) in which two orthogonal field polarizations of the TE 22N mode are excited and coupled together by means of a coupling element (78a,79b). Different combinations of inter-cavity irises (84,90) provide for both direct and cross-coupling of aligned field polarizations in adjacent cavities, as required, to realize complex filter functions. The irises may be formed in either a side or end wall of the cavities for both collinear and planar mount configuration. Negative mode coupling also allows for transmission zeros to be realized on either side of the filter passband.

A web of the first material is introduced via clamping means (311) for clamping the web of the first material. The glued web of the first material is cut, to form glued patches of the first material. A web of the second material is introduced. Finally, the glued patches of the first material are applied to the web of the second material. The method and apparatus may be particularly useful for the manufacture of smoking articles. The method and apparatus may be particularly useful for the application of heat conducting patches to a web of paper-like material during the manufacture of smoking articles.

The thread comprises a plurality of sequential instructions, the plurality of sequential instructions comprising some short-latency instructions and some long-latency instructions and at least one hazard instruction, the hazard instruction requiring one or more preceding instructions to be processed before the hazard instruction is processed. The method comprises the steps of: a) before processing each long-latency instruction, incrementing by one, a counter associated with the thread; b) after each long-latency instruction has been processed, decrementing by one, the counter associated with the thread; c) before processing each hazard instruction, checking the value of the counter associated with the thread, and i) if the counter value is zero, processing the hazard instruction, or ii) if the counter value is non-zero, pausing processing of the hazard instruction until a later time. The processor includes means for performing steps a), b) and c) of the method.

There is provided an apparatus and method for manufacturing smoking articles. Each manufactured smoking article comprises at least a first component and a second component, overwrapped with a sleeve. The method comprises the steps of: axially aligning and abutting the first component and a filling tube; overwrapping the first component and the filling tube with the sleeve; positioning the first component, the filling tube and the sleeve in a substantially vertical orientation, the first component at the lower end, the filling tube at the upper end; inserting at least the second component into the filing tube from the upper end of the filling tube; and removing the filling tube. When the filling tube is removed, the second component can expand within the sleeve. The apparatus and method find particular application in the manufacture of heated smoking articles.
