    摘要: In magnetic resonance spectroscopy or imaging, e.g. n.m.r. or e.s.r., a method of localizing the region of a sample from which a resonance signal is obtained by modulating the component Mz of magnetization in the Bo direction according to position in the sample. This is achieved by flipping the spins away from the Bo direction, applying a gradient magnetic field so that they lose or gain phase according to their position, refocussing the effects of any resonance offsets including chemical shifts and subsequently returning them to the Bo direction whereupon Mz depends on the phase lost or gained and thus the position. This may be repeated, possibly with different gradient fields or different phase pulses, to further localize the region before a resonance signal is finally detected. The contribution to the resonance signal varies with Mz and so is localized to regions of greater Mz.

    摘要: A magnetic resonance signal of a volume of interest within an object is acquired by placing the object in a magnetic field and the application of three successive steps. The first step comprises an rf selective 90° pulse of frequency fx applied in the presence of an x-gradient magnetic field to select a slice. The magnetisation of the slice is then inverted. In the second step an rf selective 90° pulse of frequency fy is applied in the presence of a y-gradient magnetic field to excite a strip of the slice. In the third step an rf selective 180° pulse of frequency fz is applied in the presence of a y-gradient magnetic field to refocus the magnetisation of a region of said strip. The resulting free induction signal is derived solely from said region.

    摘要: The invention relates to a separator, which is particularly useful for separating cellular matter. The separator utilises the phenomenon known as dielectrophoresis (DEP). A DEP force effects a particle suspended in a medium. The particle experiences a force in an alternating electric field. The force is proportional to, amongst other things, the electrical properties of the supporting medium and the particle and the frequency of the electric field. The separator, of the present invention, comprises a chamber (10) and a plurality of electrodes (12) disposed in the chamber (10). An electric field established across electrodes subjects some of the particles to a stronger force than others such that they are confined within the chamber. Particles which are not confined are removed from the chamber by the supporting medium which is preferably urged through the chamber. Valves (101 and 202) are provided on exhausts of the chamber. The invention is able to separate two different particles continuously.

    摘要: A linear motor suitable for use with a cryogenic cooler is described. The arrangement comprises first and second annular magnets (100 and 110), which in the preferred embodiment are nested and share a common axis. A circular bore (190) is defined about the common axis and is able to receive a drive shaft (220). The drive shaft (220) is connected to a base member (210) which has an annular peripheral region (200) in which a coil (200) is defined. Coil (200) has poles (150 and 160). The coil (200) when energised causes reciprocal motion of the drive shaft (220). The coil (200) per se is able to move into and out of an annular cavity (170) defined between the nested magnets (100 and 110).
