A chain conveyor is disclosed. It has a base chain with plural article conveying assemblies mounted on the base chain. The base chain has standard components, including roller link plates (22), bushings (18), rollers (16), pin link plates (20), and standard length pins (26). The base chain also has extended length pins (28). The extended length pins (28) are arranged in pairs of adjacent extended length pins (28), and one article conveying assembly is mounted on one pair of extended length pins (28). The article conveying assembly has a conveyor member (40) and a conveyor member link plate (42). The conveyor member link plate (42) has three spaced holes or openings. Two mounting holes or openings receive parts of the adjacent extended length pins (28) to mount the article conveying assembly on the base chain. The third hole or opening receives part of the conveyor member to mount the conveyor member (40) on the conveyor member link plate (42). Retainers (64) secure the article conveying assembly on the extended length pins (28). The retainers (64) are removable so that a broken or damaged article conveying assembly can be readily removed and replaced without disassembly of the entire chain. The conveyor members (40) are not co-axial with the pins (26,28), but are positioned adjacent to two adjacent pins (28).

A lightweight sideframe (20) having a solid and open, unitary cross-sectional I-beam shape, is structurally improved by strengthening both sides of the sideframe with cross-bracing at each pedestal jaw area. The cross-bracing laterally stiffens the sideframe, eliminating the susceptibility to twisting of the I-beam shape when a transverse load is experienced. The increased lateral stiffness at the jaw area also strengthens the total lateral strength of the sideframe, allowing some removal of metallic mass from the sideframe spring seat plate (25). The improved lateral sideframe strength also contributes to an increase in the threshold speed of bogie hunting.

A connection between a draft sill (80;180;314) and a railway wheel bogie is disclosed. The draft sill (80; 180;314) has a bottom and side walls extending up from the bottom. A center pin (90;190;310) extends downward from the bottom to an exterior end surface. A boss (88;188;300) encircles the center pin (90;190;310). The boss (88;188;300) is attached to the outer surface of the center pin (90;190;310) and to the bottom surface of the draft sill (80;180;314). The boss (88;188;300) includes a plurality of ribs (102;202) extending radially outward from the center pin (90;190;310). The total surface area of the horizontal surfaces of the boss (88;188;300) and the center pin (90;190;310) is less than 98 square inches. The horizontal surfaces of the boss (88;188;300) and center pin (90;190;310) do not bear any vertical load under normal conditions, and no center plate is provided. The center pin (190;310) and boss (188;300) can be integral, and can be made to extend upward from the bogie bolster to be received in an opening in the draft sill (314).

A motor (160) driving a grinding wheel (168) are mounted to a support assembly (122). The railroad wheel support assembly oscillates about an axle assembly (70,72) during grinding. The grinding assembly advances the grinding wheel (168) laterally into the railroad wheel during grinding. The lateral advancing of the grinding wheel (168) and oscillating of the railroad wheel (34) are controlled to achieve a finish grinding of the selected surface of the railroad wheel (34) to a preselected contour.
