An apparatus for inserting twist into a moving strand, including a first body including an orifice extending therethrough for permitting passage of a moving yarn. An air channel extends therethrough and communicates with the orifice. The air channel communicates with the orifice at a tangentially-offset angle to the path of the yarn through the orifice to create a cyclonic air circulation pattern in the orifice to insert a predetermined direction of twist into the yarn as the yarn passes through the orifice. The first body is adapted for being inverted relative to, and placed in overlying registration with, a second like body whereby the air channel of the first body inserts one predetermined direction of twist into the yarn and the air channel of the second body inserts another predetermined direction of twist into the yarn.

A method and apparatus for space-dyeing yarns, particularly fine denier yarns, including the steps of wrapping a plurality of feed yarns (10) with a sacrificial wrapper yarn (11) to form a composite yarn bundle (12), space-dyeing the composite yarn bundle (12), removing the wrapper yarn (11) from around the feed yarns (10), and separating the feed yarns (10) into individual yarns for further processing. An intermediate yarn product (12) for passing through the space-dyeing machine is disclosed, as well as the end product fine denier yarns (10) after being separated from the bundle (12) in which dyeing took place.

A yoke assembly (60) includes two spaced apart arms (70) and (71) which are pivotally moveable about a yoke pivot shaft (66) between a position in which they can deposit a full take-up package ("P") onto a conveyor assembly (30) and a position in which a take-up package held between the arms (70) and (71) is rotated by surface drive by a drive roll (32). In the position shown in Figure 16, the empty chuck arms (70) and (71) have just returned from depositing a full take-up package ("P") onto the conveyor and the arms are within approximately 10° or less of arc from the drive roll (32). The arms (70) and (71) are located on either side of an empty take-up package presented from a magazine (36) and they are able to move towards each other to fit a tube retaining disc into the open end of the take-up package. The yarn is held by a cutter head (53) in an axially intersecting position over the end of the empty take-up package and is tightly clamped as the disc (79) is inserted into the open end of the take-up package. The cutter head (53) then moves downwardly and the magazine (36) upwardly leaving the take-up package between the arms (70) and (71). The take-up package is then pivoted into a position where it is driven by the drive roll (32) and the yarn is caused to be wound onto the package by a yarn guide (28) according to the pattern on a transverse cam (29).

A process of producing an assembled yarn, including the steps of providing two or more yarns moving downstream from a supply to a take-up, inserting alternating-direction zones of twist into at least one of the yarns, the at least one yarn having an area of zero twist between said alternating direction zones of twist, combining the at least two yarns to form a single, integrated yarn strand, and intermittently exposing the yarn strand to an air blast to create a zone of intermingled yarns at spaced-apart points along the length of the yarn strand to prevent torsional movement of one yarn relative to the other yarn. According to one preferred embodiment of the invention, the step of exposing the yarn strand to an air blast includes the step of intermingling the yarns at the areas of zero twist.
